This stronghold is some 900 years old, just about the same as its rival of Sanabria, the other side of the border. Very well maintained and, given its strategic position in the Northeast corner of the kingdom, with true military value. The square central tower is massive and particularly impressive.

After having a perfect lunch at "Alma Lusa" we headed here to check out this Castelo. It's on top of the hill, only a short walk away from the old town.

It's a very well preserved Castle with an impressive tower. Construction began somewhen in the 13th Century. Even though there seemed to be another castle here in the 12th Century. But the current castle in its current state began to take for a century later.
The village was also moved closer to the castle and the walls at the time of building.

It's a really impressive construction and you also can walk parts of the fortified walls with some nice views. The castle is also home to a military museum. It's a really impressive place and it's rare to see a castle in this well preserved state. Really worth a visit.
There are lots of parking lots up here, but it's a nice little walk to/from town, in case you dropped your car there like us.

Excellent little town and castle on a hill. All walls around town/castle still standing. We happened to arrive for a medieval fair. Off the beaten path in corner of Portugal but worth a visit

One of the most beautiful castles in Portugal. It's really well preserved and inside there's a military museum. It's closed on mondays and on national holidays usually. On sundays during the morning it's open to the public with free entry, but on the other days the tickets are only 3€. Definitely a must go if you're visiting the Trás-os-montes region!

Beautiful castle with inner town buildings.
Plenty to explore and be surprised.
Interior car parking is limited, but with places to walk around.
Small museus and places to eat and drink with outside terraces.

We only saw the wall and walk through it, we didn’t go inside de museums.
It is a beautiful castle and wall.
It’s sad that in some points we see modern houses or antenas that cut the beautiful view, but is a place to visit.

Amazing!! We happened to visit during their annual "Festa da História" - a 4 day festival where volunteers dress up in medieval period clothing and re-create the hustle and bustle of life inside the castle walls. This was completely free!!!! Kids enjoyed playing period games, eating traditional foods (food was not free) and walking through the town complete with an alley representing the more shady part of town. Parents with younger kids may want to keep out of this area (which is just outside the public washrooms), there are characters dressed as zombies and ghosts which some kids found frightening. Check the website for next years festival dates which seem to occur yearly in August.

Well-worth a visit, especially for just 3€! You can climb up all the towers. While there are railings in most places, along the fortress wall there are not, but it's wide enough to be comfortable. Many of fhe stone steos to go up into the towers are steep and not for everyone. The wooden ladder to get up into the central, main tower is incredibly steep and even more incredibly open to the puplic to climb at their own risk. The opening at the too is small and the climb is not for the faint-hearted.

The Castle of Bragança is well known for its emblematic main tower and preserved surroundings. It’s an ideal place for a stroll or to sightseeing. There are some restaurants inside the medieval wall as well as some bars. If you are in Bragança you must visit this place.

You can go by car and leave it inside although some streets are narrow. Best idea is to leave the car outside and explore by foot :)

An impresive medieval.forification with easy access, plenty of parking spots and very.nice restaurants and bars inside the castel walls. Actually, therevare still houses and people still.live inside the castle walls, as they diid centuries ago. Make sure to visit the military tower and climb all the way to the top. The views are amazing from there!

Great castle. You can climb all the walls and towers. There is a military museum inside the keep with all the different weapons and arms used by the military over the last 500 years. Lots of stairs.

Nice castle. In very good condition. Visited a restaurant next to the castle and they was very impolite and rude. And the food wasn't good.
