We read about this church and were curious so we walked up the hill to determine if we would want to go inside. We paid the 5 Euro (seniors) and went in. At first you think it’s just going to be the empty, open air remainders of the church but at the opposite end is a museum that was very engaging with a top notch film in a theater-like room with comfy chairs. We both agreed that it was well worth the 5 euros.

This is really amazing. It's basically ruins of a convent after the famous 1755 earthquake. Inside is the floor and part of the roof structure along with some art pieces. A few rooms remain as well as some of the decorative pieces. They've also got a film playing in one of the rooms to give you some of the history. The Lisboa cad gives you a partial discount for entry.

Very interesting experience, loved the little museum inside with ancient Egyptian mummies, Portuguese tiles and some sarcophagus. Definitely worth a visit and there also was a lovely cat!

It has an archaeology museum inside, very cool and so much to see. There are a total of three mummies inside two of which are children and fully visible, if you are sensitive to that or are travelling with children I would be vary of that. Otherwise amazing experience, the open space area is also very nice to take pictures in. You can check the tickets on the website I believe, I found the price reasonable for such an experience.

For me one of the most interesting sights in Lisbon. The ruins themselves are well worth the entrance fee and after that you'll be able to spend some time in the museum with several interesting exhibits, besides others the two well-known mummies.

An attraction that has been extremely under estimated! I love this museum so much. It is not big, but it is telling you a very interesting story about the past, about its history in Lisbon. The entrance ticket is cheap but extremely valuable. There were some highlights of my time here - first of all I met the mascot, I couldn't remember how long I played with him. He is very cute and friendly and clingy with me!! Second I was amazed by the 3D movie they made for this museum. It is a "must-see" of this place! It is within the indoor display area but on the left side of the entrance. Do not miss the short movie, do not skip the movie, make sure you watch it full (it is rolling) with a 3min ish break in between. The movie was made in 2 languages and mixed spoke (Portuguese then English). The story was so interesting that you would fall into it easily. The special effect was made to fit the actual wall in the room. At the end of the movie, you can even see the mascot walking through on the screen. Slow down, take some time, Carmo Convent is definitely worthy of visiting.

This historic building shows visitors the power of the 1755 earthquake.

The Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was founded in 1389 and the church was constructed between 1389 and 1423. The church sustained heavy damage after the earthquake and much of it remains unrestored, making this one of the most unique churches to visit in Portugal.

The Gothic arches still stand but the roof was never rebuilt.

Gorgeous little relic. Great video talking about the church’s history inside, as well as a selection of rare oddities and tile works. Definitely stop by! And look out for cats sleeping in the theatre room!

If you're into old architecture and ruins this is very cool to see and it's only 5 Euro. Some very interesting artifacts and I think worth the admission price.

This is a fantastic site to visit. It was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake that devastated much of Lisbon and was only partially restored. You can visit the outside for free, but entry is very cheap and definitely worth paying. There is much history collected and displayed here, though curiously, not all of it relates to Lisbon or even Portugal. Still, for the price, it's worth it to have a look inside.

Clean bathrooms are available inside.

We walked by several times and there was always street vendors selling their wares next the Convent (jewelery, paintings, etc.), so other than the convent itself, there's lots to see.

There are also many local eateries very close, and it's also within walking distance of many other attractions and shops.

Another must-see historical site in Lisbon. These ruins are of a convent that was destroyed in the 18th century earthquake. While restoration work is done today, after the quake, the ruins were left as a reminder to the city of what had been lost.

The ruins are impressive, with an excellent museum on site.

I recommend getting to the convent early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Oh, and enjoy the convent cat who is always available for photos.

Made numerous visits to Lisboa and passed this place by until yesterday and paid the small entry fee for a spectacular history tour with artefacts dating back a very long time and the burnt out exterior is amazing. Well worth a visit.

For 4 euro ( Lisboa Card discount), there's so much to see. Beautiful UNESCO World Heritage.
Fun facts : Nuns in Carmo Convent invented super yummy Portuguese egg tarts. Love one of the guardian cat. The cat is sleeping on a chair next to the very friendly security guard.

Must See. And you pay only a few € entry.

Even better: this is where you came out when you using the „elevator“ where people stand at least one hour in the line just to realize that they could have gone the other way round to see the same view.

It is so amazing to walk through history. They are doing some repairs to the structure and the informative video/light show of the history was very cool. I also love that it is an inexpensive visit and kids are free. Worth a quick visit while in Lisbon. Awesome archeological museum that showcase the history of Lisbon. Was pleasantly surprised to see a real mummy inside!! The preserved ruins with interesting stonework is a great start as you stand beneath the remains of the vault that collapsed in the great earthquake of 1755. The museum has many interesting artifacts along with a short film about the history of the convent. Afterward we strolled around back of the ruins and climbing just a few steps we found ourselves at the top of the Santa Justa elevator that many wait in long lines to enter.

The novices have not yet taken the vow of silence and sell the extremely yummy treats for the convent. If you like almonds this is a place you should not miss. Make sure to have some of the local currency on hand to buy the amazing baked goods that they sell. We also found out that the bars were installed to keep the rowdy school boys from naughtiness.

The convent was partially destroyed in the earthquake of 1755, it's now a museum, well preserved and very cheap fee, only 5€, you can visit the ruins, the museum and see a movie about the building, quite cool.
There's even 2 mummies from Peru!

Loved this place. I almost did not go, but I am glad I decided to visit. It is in the very centre of Lisbon and it costs 5€. Ruins are impressive and small exhibition rooms are full of nice findings (including 2 mummies). Sarcofaguses were my highlights and oh... the cat that lives there!

One of the most intriguing archaeological museums I've been to. Small in size but every room is jam packed with glorious history and there's a surprise inside. Must say hi to the convent cat too!
