Ponte Romana de Tôr

The river was dry, there was only the pit visible on the picture. About 10m wide and around 6or 7 at the deepest according to our guide, we took a dive in the warm water covering the fresher depths. If you lay still in the undeep, loads of tiny fishes will come nib at your skin. Great relaxing spot!

This is the old Roman bridge over the once beautiful river near our Quinta. The small village of Tor has their annual Feira (fair) there and it is always exciting with excellent food, entertainment and camaraderie. Sadly though a nearby golf mecca has been built and has taken all the water. The old Roman bridge is still there as a testament to their occupation here after driving out the Moors. No more laughter eminates from the sounds of children splashing, women washing clothes or reeds being cut for use on the few local farms. There is an amazing amount of history here once you get away from the tourists!

Lovely small pond under the roman bridge, ideal for children. Well kept secret.

A ponte Romana de Tor foi construída na via romana secundária que ligava Mireu em Estoi, Faro e Salir Loulé na Ribeira de Quarteira, ainda nesta via existia a ponte dos Álamos perto de Loulé. Muitas vezes esta ponte é dada como muçulmana ou mesmo quinhentista ( por Dom Sebastião ) ainda que apresente dois arcos de volta perfeita típica construção romana. A explicação dada atualmente para a presença de um brasão português é devido às obras de restauro a que foi sujeita no século XV se não na alta Idade Média.
