Beeckestijn is a country estate on the Rijksweg in Velsen-Zuid, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The history of Beeckestijn goes back to the fifteenth century. At that time it was a fortified country house that came into the possession of the Beeckestijn family. Later owned by Agatha Munter (1632-1687) who married Joan Corver. Jan Trip van Berckenrode inherited the country house from his mother Margaretha Munter (1639-1711). He was succeeded by his son Jan Trip the Younger. The current estate was largely laid out between 1716 and 1721 by this Jan Trip, who married Petronella Wilhelmina van Hoorn, the daughter of the governor-general Joan van Hoorn. The sculptor and stucco artist Ignatius van Logteren, one of the most in-demand decorative artists at the time, was involved in the renovated interior. After Trip died, his widow remarried Lubbert Adolph Torck. In 1742 Jacob Boreel Janszoon, a wealthy and influential Amsterdam regent, bought Beeckestijn. He made many changes to the house and garden. For example, the side wings were added and the two coach houses appeared. Boreel had the house enlarged further in 1772 and the rear park constructed. Boreel had been to England as a diplomat and was aware of the latest developments in landscape architecture. The new construction was designed by Johann Georg Michaël (1738-1800) from Germany. The gardens were equipped with winding paths, flower-bearing shrubs, water features, meadows and romantic structures such as a gardener's house in the form of a neo-Gothic chapel. It is probably the first English garden in the Netherlands. Beeckestijn was close to the water until the 19th century. It was located at the Wijkermeer, which was then part of the IJ. Sailing to Amsterdam was possible. From 1883 the Dutch politician Petrus Hendrik Holtzman occupied the estate. It remained in private ownership until the middle of the twentieth century, after which it was handed over to the municipality of Velsen in a seriously dilapidated state. The estate features authentic formal gardens and a landscaped park. These have been slowly restored to their former glory since the 1960s. For many years, the house itself housed a museum. There, among other things, eighteenth-century period rooms, a kitchen and a children's playroom could be admired. The annual Beeckestijn Pop Festival is held in the landscape park of the estate. On Thursday 16 February 2006, the Beeckestijn Museum closed its doors after 37 years. The municipality of Velsen decided to sell the estate with house and gardens as part of large-scale cutbacks. In May 2007 the country estate was transferred to Vereniging Hendrick de Keyser. The gardens, the park and the two coach houses came into the possession of the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten. The Podium for Garden and Landscape Culture is now located on the estate. Since that time, Beeckestijn Business School has moved to the Leusderend estate in Leusden. In one of the former coach houses is now a restaurant. After visiting the country house and admiring its interior, we visited the restaurant and enjoyed a beautiful lunch with a milky coffee. It is an excellent restaurant. Great place to end a visit to the house and its gardens. House, gardens and restaurant are a perfect mix for a perfect day out. Warmly recommended.

Visited here on a whim, hoping to get some food on the way back to the port to the UK. The service was amazing. The waiter took the time to translate the menu for us, and the food was gourmet quality. All for a remarkable price. Will definitely be returning next time I'm in Holland. Beautiful building, in gorgeous surroundings.
