Laguna de los 7 colores is really stunningly beautiful. We took a tour on a samll boat (approximately 15 people) with a local guide. The price was not too high and we spend about two hours in the afternoon on this tour. We have seen the dark water above the deep cenote and turquoise colors of the lagoon. The water was warm (we visited the Bacalacr in fevruary) and very clear. We definitely recommend you the a tour around the lagoon. We did not book this tour in advance. We just arrived with a car, parked and walked to the pier, asked for the tour and in one hour we were already in the boat. They will also take you to the spot where you can safely swim.

The name comes from the fact that the varying depths of the water reflects the light in different ways. Getting into the Lagoon is quite tricky but an amazing experience. The water is freshwater and you can wade out quite a long way before the water gets too deep. This is the main reason people visit Bacalar and it was one of the highlights of the tour.

Bacalar, often referred to as the "Lagoon of Seven Colors," is a stunning lagoon located in the town of Bacalar in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. This lagoon is renowned for its striking range of blue and turquoise hues, created by varying depths and types of sediment on the lagoon floor. The crystal-clear waters, coupled with white sandy bottoms, give it a radiant, almost otherworldly appearance.

The lagoon stretches over 42 kilometers (26 miles) and is surrounded by lush vegetation and small Mayan ruins. Activities in Bacalar include swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and exploring nearby cenotes (natural sinkholes). The town of Bacalar itself offers a charming, laid-back atmosphere with small hotels, eateries, and local markets, making it a perfect destination for relaxation and ecotourism.

Key attractions include the Cenote Azul, a deep cenote ideal for diving, and the Fort of San Felipe, which provides historical context and panoramic views of the lagoon. Bacalar is also part of a designated Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town), recognized for its cultural richness and natural beauty.

Absolutely stunning! I booked on the cruise ship because there was a last min change and we didn't dock until 10am. But all was good and the team was fabulous! Matthew our guide was very cool! Great info about the Black Cenotes, great food buffett and great pontoon boat ride! It was stunning. And the water is like fresh water, barely salty. The bus ride is for sure 1 hour each way from the cruise port.

Amazing water - a must do! We hired a 2-person kayak and it was 500 pesos for 3 hours.

Gorgeous vibrantly blue large lake with lots of boat tours you can take. Support the environment and preserve the lake by taking a sailing trip instead of one of the motored pontoon boats please. We stayed at a house on the lake and it was incredible to look out at the many shades of blue all day. Be forewarned though, all the tourist hotels and restaurants in town are very expensive (and I’m used to California prices) and we didn’t find any of the food to be exceptional, even at the restaurant that we were told was the best restaurant in town. We did have some really great(but expensive) burritos at a food truck across from our house though.

Great Place when you visit Mexico. The water has a wonderful turquoise color. Since it is a small village you can go everywhere by foot. Put your feet into the lake or even take a swim!

Bacalar lagoon is a wonder of the natural world. The water is clear turquois blue but it does change colors depending on the depth and how close you are to a cenote that's feeding its waters to the lagoon, and there are several cenotes that do. The water is warm but not too warm. Still refreshing on a hot day. Please don't wear sunscreen or deodorant when going into the lagoon as it harms the ecosystem , and especially the snails that work tirelessly to clean the water.

Breathtaking beauty with high contrast color changes and the clearest water I've ever seen! We were on a pontoon that was well kept and was great for seeing many parts of the lagoon.

Very beautiful lagoon, I do recommend to buy your tickets in advance on high season, and if you are a english speaking you need to make sure your guide speaks English.
They respect the nature so much and that's why it's in a such a beautiful condition, they recommend don't use sun protection when you swim on the lagoon.
Some of the tours have music, and refreshments for tourists. Prices are around 300 to 450 pesos per person depending of the company.
