Great place! My husband and I had one of the one-story rooms in the back. It was cute and cozy but we didn't spend much time in the room because the pool was so amazing! We enjoyed relaxing on the swing lounges over the water. The bar was great and I had 3 different blue colored drinks which was fun! Everyone was friendly, accommodating, and put up with our broken Spanish :) The restaurant was fantastic and served a tasty breakfast. We ate dinner there one night which was interesting, unique and delicious. Our server had great recommendations, one of which was a chocolate tart for dessert that I will be dreaming about for years to come.

Omem is the best mezcalero bartender you can find in the city. His knowledge and dedication are pure gold. Highly recommend the mezcal tasting as there is great variety of really good mescals.

The hotel is a dream - when it comes to architecture it is very tasteful and the atmosphere is great.

Really good vibes, super clean and friendly staff.

This is what it looks like when an organization spends truely attention to every aspect of a hotel. What an amazing place is this! Every detail has been thought through and the result is stunning: very nice, natural pool just in between the restaurant and the bar so that the whole public area is attached to each other. The rooms are upstairs and most of the have view on the pool. Also there is a very nice green garden and there are lots of beautiful decorations everywhere. On top of all that the breakfast they serve is unbelievable tasteful! Oh yeah and about the small rooms: they are efficient setup and indeed not big, but the whole idea is that you spend your time outside the room, where there are nice guests and chill vibes to give you a comfortable holiday feeling!

Stayed here for two nights, and had a wondeful experience. The hotel offer so many great deals on activities it made Bacalar such a great experience. The breakfasts were truly amazing with some great dishes on offer. The location is great only 5 minutes to the Fort and tons of restaurants. Only downside is that the rooms are a bit basic but the pool area is so great that you don't want to spend any time in the rooms anyway.

Wow - what a beautiful hotel!!! The entire property was so pretty, very clean, very relaxing. We stayed twice in the past week - first time in a regular room and the second in a loft room. I will admit I was not too pleased about the loft at first - I have a horrible fear for heights and the idea of climbing down super steep stairs in the dark at night to go pee just terrified me - BUT I slept so well I didn’t even have to get up during the night. 😂 It was such a unique room and honestly one of the most comfortable hotel rooms I’ve stayed in. I loved it and highly recommend it if stairs are not a concern for you. We also ate dinner one night at the hotel (sadly had to leave early in the am and did not get to enjoy breakfast) and it was outstanding. An interesting menu even and everything we ordered was delicious. Looking forward to future visits hopefully!

Amazing experience in Bacalar. We stayed 4nights. Best caring staff, they offer insanely delicious, healthy, rich and well-presented breakfast options, all included! It’s a 10/10.
I even asked if I could get a coconut from their trees to eat it for breakfast and they brought us coconut water in a class and the halved coconut to spoon out the pulp! cannot put in words the flavor!!! They took care of every aspect of our staying with so much kindness and warmth. Will be back at Makaaba for sure next time! Highly recommended to fully enjoy la hermosa Bacalar. Cherry on top: it’s very eco-friendly 🙌

Fabulous design and ambiance.Super friendly reception and people.the king size room is spacious and covers your needs
Very nice breakfast and healthy menu.

Bed and bedding could have been better, as it’s such a beautiful hotel and would be perfect with a higher quality of the previous
However, still had a comfortable and pleasant sleep and enjoyed the stay

Beautiful hotel. The pools and common areas are beautiful, reminded me of Bali. The rooms are basic and small but once you get here you will see the last place you want to be in is the room.

The hotel includes your breakfast. The breakfast was incredible!! Everything we had was fantastic, we ended up also having dinner at the hotel because the food was soo good.

Loved the concept of the hotel too. Decor and ethos make it a great place.

This is probably the most best hotel I’ve EVER been to. We were actually staying somewhere a couple blocks away, but walked by and were drawn in by the gorgeous swimming pool. We loved it so much we ended up coming back 3 times in 2 days- we just couldn’t stay away! The drinks and food were phenomenal. Many of the ingredients are actually prepared on the property! The place is absolutely stunning- they really don’t waste an inch of space, everything in this hotel is meticulously curated. It’s run buy an incredibly warm and welcoming family as well. I think it’s a newer hotel, which is why it may not have as many reviews as other places in bacalar (and why we missed it in our initial hotel search)- but do not miss out on this hidden gem! Seriously, you won’t regret it.

This was a wonderful 3-nights we had at Makaaba! Such lovely people and nice location.

Just a few minutes from centro, Makaaba is an eco-boutique hotel that exceeded most of our expectations.

PROS

First of all, the decor and ambiance are incredible. We feel elsewhere and that's very relaxing. The food and cocktails were very good. The included breakfast (1 sweet starter and 1 main plate) was excellent.

The staff was extremely friendly and their English level helped us when we lacked the Spanish words.

We had the suite (quadruple room) for two so we didn't feel it was too small. We saw other rooms that did look pretty small though. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was great as well. It had AC.

The staff helped us for taxi and activities. We really enjoyed staying there.

CONS

We noticed the drinks prices were the highest we saw in Bacalar (we went to 5-6 restaurants in comparison). 150-200 pesos per cocktail. Food is fairly priced though.

The suite we were in was on top of the cleaning team's storage so it did wake us. That's a little detail to be aware of.

The WiFi isn't very stable, especially in the rooms. The 4G network was fine on our sim cards so it smoothed the issue.

Last but not least, there is a construction site right next to the hotel (and the rooms) working from 7-8AM to 5-6PM as of early November 2022. In the pool, we didn't hear the workers too much, but in the rooms we hear the construction site pretty well. In any cases, you should be enjoying Bacalar or the pool so that shouldn't be a big issue ;)

FINAL NOTE

We definitely recommend this hotel and want to thank all the staff for this incredible stay!

Absolutely beautiful hotel with the best type of setting and pool area. Staff were super friendly - good location too being near the lake and also near to town. Only downside is at breakfast (usually this is included) they were very slow and forgot the order a lot. Being vegan it was hard to get across this sometimes, but the food was always food quality.

Awesome hotel with super friendly staff, tasty breakfast and many options to hang out around the rain water pool. If you prefer to swim in the lagune it is only a 5 minute walk away. :)

An awesome place to stay. Cool chilled vibe, lovely pool, awesome places to layout in the sun. Breakfasts (vegan options a little limited) were amazing (chilaquiles!), staff lovely. Rooms small but you don’t need much room when you’re chilling in the netting in front of your room each day/eve. Highly recommend! Thanks team, you guys were great!

We didn’t stay the night, just had drinks food n swam in the exquisite pool. This place is tasteful, clean, new, modern, and everyone treated us so well. I can’t stand chlorine pools and was confused as why we might want a pool while we were at such a beautiful lake, until I saw the pool! It is a work of art and science and I hope it inspires others to do the same. Lovely place.

Best hotel ever. The pools are filled via rain water, and there's even a little pool on the second floor to relax in. The rooms are loft-style: perfectly compact and efficient. AC works great. Shower is strong. It's right next to the lagoon and cafes so you'll always have something to do. Highly recommended.

This Hotel is amazing, try a gin and tonic by the pool, ask about how they recycle their sewer water or how the fish on the ponds clean the pool’s water. they use those chains by the pool to collect the rain water and reuse it! Every part of this hotel is made with a purpose. The owners are here and super friendly. I truly recommend it :)

Incredible architecturally designed hotel. With a huge spacious pool, lots of private spaces around the pool for relaxing. Amazing bar, super friendly vibes. Swings, netted hammocks, seating and an amazing diving board into a deep plunge. Thank you!

A beautiful, sustainable hotel with great food, lovely scenery, and friendly staff. We felt welcomed and comfortable and were especially impressed by their use of local farmers ingredients including honey. Make sure to take a look at the chameleons by the bar!
