Rabat jest współczesną stolicą Maroka, położone na wybrzeżu Atlantyku u ujścia Wadi Bou Regreg. Historia Rabatu jest ściśle związana z historią miasta Salé, po prawej stronie ujścia rzeki.
Sam Rabat został założony w XII wieku przez Abd al-Mu'min pierwszego z Almohadów. Trzeci sułtan z Almohadów, który nazwał miejsce Ribāṭ al-Fatḥ. Wzniósł on wielki mur obronny, w którym rozwinęło się współczesne miasto. Rozpoczął budowę ogromnego meczetu, którego pozostałością jest słynna Wieża Hassana.
Wewnątrz tych murów znajduje się medyna (stare miasto muzułmańskie) oraz mellah (dzielnica żydowska). Na północnym krańcu, na klifie Atlantyku została zbudowana w XVii wieku kazba (forteca obronna) ze wspaniałą XII-wieczną bramą Almohad,
Oglądane z zewnątrz fortyfikacje koloru ochry zdają się otaczać całą stolicę i robią niesamowite wrażenie.

Rabat is the modern capital of Morocco, located on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of Wadi Bou Regreg. The history of the Rabat is closely related to the history of the city of Salé, on the right side of the estuary.
Sam Rabat was founded in the 12th century by Abd al-Mu'min, the first of the Almohads. The third Sultan of Almohad who named this place Ribāṭ al-Fatḥ, erected a great defensive wall in which the modern city developed.
