Institute of Surveying and Mapping

This is the surveying and mapping teaching center in Sri Lanka. It produces surveyors to the country. Surveying defines the administration boundaries, surveyors visit any development site at the first before other professionals come, most importantly surveying defines the locations. They have laboratory facilities and equipment with a small museum. An valuable asset in the country.

Survey department was the first government department to established in sri lanka in 1800s. Institute of Surveying & mapping was established in 1920s to train surveyors .it is the home of Land surveyors. Even today physical sciences graduates get their surveying and mapping training here.and many courses conducted here for groups who are related to surveying

Institute of Surveying and Mapping is located at Diyatalawa Badulla district and about 200 Km away from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. It embraces an area of nearly 25 Hectares in an undulated terrain surface surrounded by sky hugging mountains, which contain eucalyptus, pine and tea plantation. It provides an ideal situation for studies and carrying out field exercises in surveying. The Latitude and Longitude of the ISMD is 6' 49' 02 N, 80'57' 34 E respectively and the elevation is about 1200 m from Mean Sea Level (MSL). It has a temperate climate throughout the year.
