Another calm and cool environment situated in Galle. In the rainy days there are too many leaches. other than that there are not too much. but you have to prepare for it. A 17km drive from Galle town in the Udugama road you can arrive this place. I saw Brown-capped Babbler, Yellow-browed bulbul, Dark-fronted babbler, Kandukara Bodilima, tickle blues flycatcher. Crimson-backed Flameback. Alexandrine Parakeet there. most of those birds are endemic. the light condition of the forest is too low due to the large trees & bushes. you have to have high iso level to capture these birds if you are a bird lover.

Kottawa rain forest is a one of the most prominent tourists attractive place in Galle district in southern Sri Lanka. It is a tiny rain forrest which home to a few hundred of my favorite black monkeys. Anyone can witnesses the forrest without obtaining prior permission other than the staff at forrest entrance. Most importantly, it is not far away from the Galle town. You can also easily reach there by cycling, scooter, cab servise or public transport as those are readily awailable arround Galle town. It is also a threatened by forrest destroyers. Cutting or harming trees are strictly prohibited here as a few specialities are living. Monkeys in the forrest will never reach visitors as they aren't friendly to people and will never become troubles for your visit. If you happened to visit, please be kind enough not to feed animals in and arround. You can also find a natural water swimming pool close to kottawa rain forrest. It will be the coolest swimming pool you enjoy for ever. Kottawa rain forrest divide in to two parts by a public main road from galle to udugama. If you happened to visit this beautiful rain forrest mind you that this road lead to another two important rain forrests know as Sinharaja and Kanneliya.

Kottawa Reserve Forest is located at a distance of 21 km from the city of Galle in the Galle District of the Southern Province, it is a beautiful, tranquil and cool lowland evergreen ecosystem. Situated at an altitude of 50-300 m above sea level, this reserve is also known as Punchi Sinharaja.

To see the Kottawa Reserve Forest you have to enter the entrance of the reserve which you will find after traveling about 21km on the Galle Udugama road.

History:History has it that during World War II, it was used as a British Empire headquarters. Also in 1930 a study was done on the existing land and in 1937 it was named as Kottawa Forest Park. Although this was part of the Sinharaja in the early days, due to later human activities and human settlements, the Kottawa Reserve Forest is now limited to a small area of about 37 acres apart from the Sinharaja.

When you go one way in this Kottawa Reserve Forest you will find a natural pool full of coolness. Most people who visit Kottawa Reserve Forest do not forget to go down to this pool and have fun. Also, there is a tea research institute located near the Kottawa Reserve Forest so you can have the same experience here.

When you enter this reserve, you will not feel lonely because the tranquility of the environment is broken by the sounds of the various species of birds that live here. Kottawa Reserve Forest is a major habitat for native birds and small species of fish endemic to the small streams that flow through the reserve. The plants in the Kottawa Reserve Forest add a unique beauty to the ecosystem.

Easily can access to this rainforest from galle. There are lot of species of trees can be seen. Among there are many dipterocarpus hispidus trees( helicopter trees) they are about 400 years old. There no not much animal to see but few types of lizards.

Kottawa forest reserve is situated in northeast of Galle along the main road to Udugama township. This isolated patch of low country rain forest is only about 37acres in extent. Nevertheless, it has all the features of a typical rainforest. The vegetation is that of wet evergreen type with tall trees struggling upwards to reach the sunlight with small canopies touching each other preventing the penetration of sunlight to the bed of the forest.
