A very important and sacred place. Magul Maha Vihara is considered to be the place where Vihara Maha Devi and King Kawantissa got married at this sacred place on the border of Lahugala Forest Reserve on Siyambalanduwa - Pothuvil road. Excavations are currently underway to uncover remains of archaeological value. The temple ground is full of ruins with a very valuable moon lamp and an old dagaba. This place of worship, which brings awe of our history, is a must-visit place for those traveling in the eastern region.

2500 year old Temple complex hidden away near Pottuvil. Little bumpy off road takes you there and after a little walk in the middle of nowhere you see a beautiful well preserved mystical temple and moon stone. Absolutely a must see. Beware of the dogs though..🤯

It is one of the most valuable archeological site situated in the area. Lahugala is not very popular among the travelers, hence you will not find a large crowd here. You can get more information on the historical value of the premises from the information boards as well as the officials of archeological department who are present there.

This is an ancient Buddhist Temple situated in Lahugala Eastern province in Sri lanka. The temple lies on the Northern edge of the Lahugala national park. Here we could see lots of ruins of Magul Maha Viharaya and also it’s a very famous tourist attractive place. This temple has built by The King Kavantissa in 2nd century BC where he married the princesses Viharamaha Devi. One of the special things on this place is The MoonStone, somrthing unseen in all other Sri Lankan moonstones. The elephants on this moonstone all have riders on their backs. Here you can see ruins of Shrine, Bodhi Tree Protector, Stupa, Main Gate, Moonstone, Palace, Ponds, etc… It’s better to visit this place under sun light, because evening time there will be Elephants nearby. It’s really worth to visit.
