This would definitely be one of my unforgettable experience!!! We stayed here for 1 night, (28-29/01/2024) room with the river view, so amazing. Everything and everyone attention to details is impeccable. Welcome drinks with green tea and miso soup looking out to the river while they check us in. The baths are amazing especially the mixed and private ones with the waterfall view. Every guests are in yukata, so cute. Dinner and Breakfast serves in courses with great care, it's a while experience by itself. We will definitely be back thank you for one of the best experience!

It's not been so easy to reach this structure, in Nyuto Hot Springs area, through trains and then with the local bus, but it was definitely worth all the efforts. We found ourselves in a traditional Japanese-style mountain onsen, next to a river, on which our room faced with a spectacular glass window. Snow covering all the surrounding woods. At our disposal, yukata, towels, combs, soap, bags and everything required for the bath and comfortable stay. Sleeping at night on traditional futons. The onsen itself is not incredibly large, completely wooden built, with different pools, both internal and external, separated by men and women, but also with a mixed external one directly over the river. Also, there's a private pool that can be booked at the arrival, with one free slot included in the price. Dinner and breakfast are included as well, prepared with traditional foods that are not always friendly for western guests, but basically healthy and simple, served with so much care and kindness, up to the last detail. Alchoolic beverages are considered as extras. One of the best all-round experiences in my life, I hope I can come back here someday and I strongly suggest this place to eveybody that is planning to travel nearby. Ideal for romantic escape also.

I hardly give all 5 stars but Taenoyu truly deserved it. The room is clean and comfortable. The staff is friendly and professional. The location is awesome as it is walkable to another 2 onsens and there are shuttle buses going to other onsens too.

A lovely stay in Nyuto Onsen, the mixed-gender open-air onsen is absolutely amazing in the snow. It was a bit too 'open' for actual mix-gendering for us so we went out during the female-only timeslot, which is sufficient.
Food was tasty, staff were busy but still nice and attentive. The Taiwanese young woman that serve us breakfast was in particular very nice.
Room was a basic japanese room, but ours was newly renovated and was comfy to stay in. Love the view from the window to the small river outside. And kotatsu was really lovely! :)

Located in the middle of the mountains, the ryokan is situated right next to a small waterfall which can be seen from the mixed bath and private bath. There are sufficent baths serving the whole ryokan (7 in total) that it never felt crowded. In fact, we had the baths to ourselves most of the time and it was during the weekend.

Service is impeccable and food is excellent. The rooms are comfortable as well. All in all, reasonably priced for an excellent experience.

Amazing service and food as expected as for a ryokan of this tier. It’s close to Ganiba onsen and a couple of other onsens so it’s convenient. Women can wear towels into the mixed bath.

It had the most modern onsen facilities among the onsens I visited so it’s good for a night stay.

I stayed at the Tae no Yu ryokan for one night in late December 2022, and I was extremely happy with my stay. It is a gorgeous and accommodating traditional Japanese inn. It was very accessible, the staff were fantastic, the food was delicious, the room was very comfortable and the baths were just the best.

Planning and getting there:
We took the Komachi shinkansen directly from Tokyo station to Tazawako station, and then took a connecting public bus, which leaves right from the station and stops at other ryokan along the way to Tae no Yu. I would strongly recommend the bus if you visit in winter, as the mountain roads can be difficult when driving. When we arrived, the staff carried our luggage from the bus to our room for us. They also explained the layout of the building, and the schedules for dinner, breakfast, and the various baths.

Features:
Your booking includes dinner and breakfast. They serve an absolutely delicious multi-course meal for dinner, a "kaiseki" meal with lots of fish and veggies. While you eat, the staff will prepare your room for bed, so when you come back you'll have your room all set to go. If you stay in the traditional rooms, this means your futon beds will be laid out for you and ready for sleep (although you should definitely go to the baths first). They have western-style rooms with beds, but we didn't stay in one. They also serve Japanese-style breakfast, which is a set and has a mix of different foods.

The baths are amazing. They do not have baths in each room. Instead, they have a women-only bath, a men-only bath, and a mixed bath with separate entrances for men and women (and some private mixed baths adjacent to the main bath, which we reserved at check-in). In winter, you can look up at the sky and watch as snowflakes fall all around you, which is amazing when you're sitting in very hot water. Be sure to get one of the cold drinks from the vending machines after being in the hot water - it tastes 1000% better.

Communication and service:
World class! The staff were very accommodating and communicated with us via email, in both English and Japanese. They had at least one staff member who spoke excellent English while we were there, which was great for us. Everyone was very sweet and made sure we were taken care of. I would recommend notifying the staff via email in advance if you do not speak much Japanese, so they can be sure to accommodate you. Advance planning is good.

Related to that, I wanted to make a special note about the impeccable service. They are very accommodating of allergies. I have a specific food allergy, and mentioned it right away when booking the room online as they requested. Since Tae no Yu serves delicious breakfast and dinner sets which include that ingredient, I was expecting that it would be hard for them to make an exception. But instead, they created a totally separate, equally amazing meal just for me, without the ingredient I am allergic to. I am beyond extremely grateful.

I think this is one of the finest establishments I have stayed in, not just in Japan, but in the world. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a traditional Japanese experience.

妙乃湯のスタッフさん、本当にありがとうございました.

This is called a secret hideout hot spring. The hotel is situated in the mountains. The open-air spa faces waterfalls. There are two dining halls, one faces the stream and another the road with a river valley behind. The dining experience is unspeakable with the view.

Sublime. One of the best stays I had my entire life. If you read this - you must go there.

The onsen in situated on a waterfall deep in the forest, with a scenic atmosphere. The inn's design is beautiful, with great attention to detail, makes the stayer feel immersed in the experience. We stayed in the Ryokan stay and I highly recommend the traditional experience. The onsens baths themselves are each unique, high quality and clean.

The dining experience is an expertly crafted journey of the local cuisine, so well put together, it overshadowed a Michelin star dining we had the night before.

This is an incredible gem in the mountains of north Japan, and an experince that will resonate with us for much longer.

Went a day drip from Kakunodate for the public bath, thoroughly enjoyed the bath and lunch service. It’s nicely decorated, everything feels new and squeaky clean. there’re three different baths for women, although they’re not big, since it’s weekday there aren’t so many people, it doesn’t feel crowded, and we’re by ourselves most of the time.
I have to mention the soft serve ice cream from the restaurant is so creamy and delicious that it’s THE best soft serve ice cream I’ve ever had! A must try after you come out of the hot bath!

I had a wonderful stay at Tae No Yu during the first week of July. The view from our room facing the river was pure magic! The room decor was elegant and the beds were very comfy compared to past ryokan experiences. The onsens themselves were similar to other onsens in Japan however they had a mixed bath with a wonderful view of the man made waterfalls. The included breakfast and dinner were very lavish and delicious. They serve a kaiseki style meal so you get lots of small plates of local mountain vegetables, seafood, and meat. Their ice cream was one of the best I had in all of Japan. Coming from San Francisco, this hotel is a good value! Total came out to around 150 dollars per person each night with the included meals. The only thing that was an issue was booking the reservation. It requires patience and going through a third party booker like Ikyu.

Amazing stay with the outdoor onsen outlook the waterfall. It’s clean, staff being sincerely helpful, decent and beautifully decorated.
The food is delicious and seasonal favourite.
I’d love to come again next time travelling to North-east Japan.

I booked at Tae no yu mostly because nearby Tsuru no yu, my Nyuto Onsen go-to ryokan, was fully booked. But i really didn’t regret it: the rooms at Tae no yu are gorgeous and comfortable, the staff is extremely nice and friendly, food is delicious, and the baths are less atmospheric than in other places in Nyuto Onsen, but still extremely pleasant

A unique experience in this traditional yet modern onsen.
Everything from the staff to the location on the waterfalls and onsen pools and, of course, the dinner and breakfast in the traditional Kaiseky Riori style was a true 1 or 2 stars Michelin experience.
A hidden jem!

This is by far the most authentic Onsen experience for me. The traditional Japanese food was excellent with great chef and nice staff! The outdoor Onsen was unbelievable - Onsen with snow and a great night view of a spectacular waterfall. The room was big enough compared to other Onsen places and the staff was very polite. Nice stay.

This is my favorite onsen in the Nyuto circle! Their facilities are clean, modern, but still beautiful. The mixed baths overlook the waterfall, making for a beautiful experience.

The service is excellent and extremely friendly, despite the lack of English knowledge for most of the staff.

Beautiful ryokan and the setting is just magical. We visited in mid March and still plenty of snow around. Out of all the onsens in Nyuto, Tae no yu onsen was our favourite baths. Very clean and facilities were good. The staff were amazingly polite and welcoming. Our server at dinner was so enthusiastic to share about Akita cuisine and local language to us. We would definitely be coming back to Tae no yu on our next Akita visit!

Lovely outdoor infinity mixed pool ... Imagine the snow flakes falling on one's face while gazing at the waterfall cocooned by the warm hot spring waters of Taenoyu ... Complete this lustrous experience with a delicious bowl of hot udon in the warmth of a traditional Japanese hearth. Simply beautiful ❄🤩🌟
