From Akita Station to Tazawako Station is 1h by bullet train, 2h by local train. Although it takes some time to access, it is a place worth visiting. We visited here in early March 2024. There is still certain snow left, the mornings and evenings are bit cold. The calm blue surface of the lake surrounded by a forest covered with white snow was so awesomely beautiful! Tazawako Station is spacious, and nearby you can also eat local specialties like Kiritanpo and Inaniwa Udon. You can also access the sulfuric Nyuto Onsen or ski slope with good snow in about 30 minutes by bus.

Went on a boat tour looping around the lake. Was awesome to see the foliage and the emerald colors of the waters. Ticket was 1400 yen. Throw fish bait for 100 yen and they will swarm like piranhas.

What a hidden beauty near Akita station. This place is not much developed and has very infrequent public transportation during winter time. I recommend to take rental car from Akita station and visit this place. Such a majestic view during winter of this lake. It is really deep lake(~424m) and definitely worth visiting. For public transportation nearest railway station is Tazawako.

Breathtaking view and clear waters. You can also rent bikes for tour at around 3,500 yen for 3 hours to bike around the lake.

The water is bluer than other blue ponds I have seen in Japan and it’s fun to feed fishes though it. The golden dragon lady is mesmerizing. The cloudy weather was even better we could feel the clouds hovering over the lake and when sun came out it was magnificent feeling

Fall colors at peak. Unfortunately it was cloudy today. On a sunny day you can expect to see emerald green lake complimenting the fall colors. Lake circle bus is good. They stop at statue bus stop for 20 min and shrine for 10 min. You can get really good view with no crowd.

Around 20km in circumference, beautiful lake in Akita prefecture. We did a bicycle tour around the lake. There are plenty of restaurants on the lake side and rental places for bicycles and 50cc motorbikes and lodging as well.

Beautiful lake and you will appreciate more by renting a bike and cycle round the lake. Easy access from Morioka station, and take about 4hrs easy pace to ride round the lake.

This is one of the best place to see maples trees in Japan. If you come here between middle of October and middle of November and drive a car to circle around this lake. Amazing spot is every where.

You can take a pleasure boat around Lake Tazawa. It takes about 40 minutes, but you will be healed by the beautiful blue and mountains of Lake Tazawa.

Peaceful place, nice water reflection for photos! The local public buses really like a tour bus, stop at interesting places for 10-20 minutes for you to take photos and walk a bit! Enjoyed my day trip!

I saw this picture many years ago in a National Geographic and had to come see it myself. I visited this place in the Spring so I could avoid the crowds from the Winter season and the summer season, and I still found it beautiful. BE WARNED - in the off season the buses do not run regularly. I had to walk from my hotel all the way around the lake in order to see this beautiful statue. Worth it. The serene lake in a quiet mountain is what I needed to get away from the hustle of the city.

It's very pretty, but the price for the bus is also costly. If you take the bus to go here, the bus will be stop for 25 minutes, so you could enjoy the scenery and then come back to the bus. But if you stop until here only, it will cost you 710¥. It might be inconvenient, because you have to wait for a long time to take the next bus (740¥).
So it would be better if you just use the same bus.

If you want to buy the fish's food (sakana no esa), you could buy it at the shrine here for 100¥. Because the water is very clear, you could see a lot of hata-hata fish in here
