Came here for a DAY ONSEN (did not stay overnight) @ Y800 per person. However, we got a glimpse of the rooms and they looked really good.

It is quite hard to get to. There is a free parking, and then you need to walk down a slope (~1-2 minutes) to get to the "village".

This place is for you if you are looking for a traditional onsen experience. Do not expect very modern equipment here.

We really had a fantastic time in the open air onsen. The water is quite obviously filled with minerals. And service was fantastic even when they were not super fluent in English and knew that we were just coming for a day pass.

We had such an incredible experience here. We stayed for two nights. The onsen is nestled in between the mountains at the end of the valley. It is very peaceful. This was the perfect place to unwind. The mixed onsen was great for us as a couple. When you're staying for the night, you can also reserve the private onsen for free. The food was very local and tasty and different every day. The staff was incredibly polite and helpful. If you come by public transport, they will pick you up from the last bus stop.

Very nice onsen hotel. The location is not close to the bus stop, but there is a pick up service at the final stop. The environment is amazing.

I'm from Texas, and I don't speak Japanese except for a few simple phrases just to get around.

The staff here is very kind and made me feel very welcome. They introduced me to the rooms and showed me how everything works. A woman that worked there was great at communicating even without needing a lot of English which made my stay here much easier.

I stayed in the smallest available room for a single person. It was clean and actually pretty spacious. I had no problems using the public restroom, it was very clean.

The food is superb, a 6/5. I didn't even feel hungry for lunch with the amount of food that was provided for breakfast and dinner. It was surely some of the most delicious meals I have eaten in Japan. I think it leans towards more traditional food, but it's made with care and attention to detail.

The onsen was nice and hot. I couldn't stay in too long to be honest, but I wouldn't change anything. The location may make it difficult to visit other onsen during your stay if that's your plan.

I could not appropriately express my gratitude to the staff due to my limited Japanese, but thank you for your hospitality.

Haven't stayed but as a leg of the Nyuto onsen pass. The hosts were friendly. Two onsen onsite were accessible to pass holders. Both were not big but great autumn view.

Amazing Onsen and the people were awesome. Unfortunately, unlike other Onsens in the area it's a bit further into the mountain and requires a vehicle or having them pick you up. (You can walk but it's a decent walk)

Would definitely go there again. They give breakfast and dinner, but offer lunch if you're there for more than one day. Food was amazingly delicious.

Charming and rustic ryokan, set in serene surroundings. Loved the views and the fresh air. Ryokan picked us from Ganiba bus stop on arrival.

Tap water is portable – it was cool and refreshing. Dinner was oishi!

Kuroyu Onsen is one of 7 hotsprings of Nyuto Onsen. A rustic ryokan with wooden thatched buildings in a remote part of Nyuto Onsen. Access is by foot which can be challenging for some. There are 3 outdoor and 5 indoor pools. We particularly like the mixed gender (konyoku ) open air bath (rotenburo) which is becoming a rarity. Due to its remote location and heavy snowfall, the onsen is closed from mid-November to mid-April. Plans to accommodate various types of visitors include half board (two meals), self-catering or day trippers.

Very traditional onsen hotel. Good place for chilling out and experience original decoration of hot spring. Surprisingly senior staff can speak good English which is good for people who are not able to speak Japanese. Dinner and breakfast both provide great various options. Maples have a tendency to turn red in the end of Oct and would be the best season to visit.

This is one of the best Authentic Japanese Hot springs. When you take outdoor bathrooms, you can enjoy dynamic atmosphere. And you are satisfied with their dinner which includes a lot of local specialities.

A wonderful onsen experience from a bygone era. At least one of the baths is konyoku - I.e mixed gender, no swimsuit. That’s the way things were before the Meiji revolution imposed Victorian Era morality on Japan. This place is beautiful, rustic, and - with advance notice - vegetarian friendly. Staff was great. Overall wonderful experience.

Phenomenal onsen in a beautiful part of Tohoku. If you want to experience a traditional Japanese onsen with waters from a hotspring, this is a great option.
