「天明四年八月」に建立されたと記されている馬頭観世音菩薩で、いわゆる「天明の大飢饉」が起こった頃だということが隣にある石碑に書かれています。
「難所中の難所の西根の坂」とあることから、当時はここが亀尾島もしくは内ヶ谷への交通路だったと思われます。
