Mitsuboshien Kanbayashi Sannyu Main Shop

Once affirmed by the Japan Emperor, this is a cozy and nice to place to shop, dine and learn.

The owner is the 16th generation of this place and he is very friendly and proud of his heritage. He showed me his family photo and even point to me his grandfather and father in the photo which is pretty amazing. And the Japan Emperor even affirmed their green tea once as one of the best in Japan.

The dine in section serves matcha and other tea products which is pretty good. Strongly recommend to take up the highest grade of the matcha tea because it tastes really good! It doesn’t have the typical bitter taste when drinking it hot, while the matcha taste is really rich! It just amazed me when the matcha tastes so good without sugar. The hojicha wafer ice cream is amazingly good as it is not sweet at all and the hojicha flavour is rich. Something that artificial seasoning can’t replicate. The red bean soup with mochi is way too sweet for me but this is how they serve their red bean soup.

They have limited variety of souvenirs and matcha / tea but the price was reasonable.

Next, move on to the second floor where the mini museum is. This is where the history of Mitsuboshien Kanbayashi Sannyu is being exhibit which is pretty amazing!

All the staff are very friendly and the checkout counter is fast too.

All in all, this place is definitely worth visiting!

We entered this shop not realizing it had a café in the back, but I'm glad the owners let us know! Really worth it going here, you can choose between different grades of matcha, combined with Japanese sweets. I ordered matcha with zenzai (sweet red bean "soup"), which came with an extra cup of houjicha (which was also delicious, and of course for sale in their shop!).

We were probably not the only ones who failed to realize the existence of the café, because it was quite empty.

Would definitely recommend this place if you want to try some really good Japanese tea and sweets, in a relaxing atmosphere.

Beautiful place, great service. Their matcha is very high quality, we did the matcha ceremony and was so glad we done that! The owner are very friendly and also speak English and Chinese. Appreciate the great hospitality

Very satisfying matcha desserts. Even though there was no queue outside this shop, the food here was amazing. The staff was nice and passionate in giving you suggestion. They have English menu as well.

Lovely matcha shop that claims to be the oldest in the area. Patriarch has served past emperors. Family run business. Husband of the daughter speaks English and was able to walk us through a simple tea ceremony which involved us grinding our own tea leaves. Beautiful store owned and managed by beautiful people. Would definitely come back.

Mitsuboshien Kanbayashi Sannyu is one of the oldest leaf makers in Uji and has regularly appointed to supply to the Japanese Royal family. It is a small family run shop, who at the time of writing, at their 17th generation. There is a space upstairs which provides a bit of history about the family and the business, and tea ceremony is offered downstairs at the back the shop. The shops sells several different tea products, but make sure you purchase those which have its logo in there. The tea was very fragrant and environment was well maintained. Overall it was a good experience and doesn't feel commercialised. Will recommend 👍👍🍵

I stumbled upon this store and was so pleasantly surprised to find it had a cafe portion to it as well. They had a good selection of teas and I wish I had stopped here before going to some of the other shops on the street.

It was a really hot day, so I got the cold version of the matcha with red bean + mochi. It tasted so delicious and was a perfect way to take a break.

very friendly and enthusiastic staff, english speaking, explaining the different types of tea available for purchase. can see and smell the fragrant hochicha leaves being roasted at the store front and matcha grinding away inside. cafe available inside but didn’t try the cafe, would likely try it next time.

This long time family owned tea shop is a one of a kind experience. The family has been operating this store for a very long tour and they have a little museum that explains the history of the business. Great place to try your hand at the old fashioned matcha tea making process.

A wonderful tea house! We had ordered a matcha making experience workshop online, but was not able to make it on that day. When we still went there on a later date, the owner honored our order, had the workshop for us! Great people who did their best to keep their tradition. Highly respected!

Really good matcha tea. The owner is very kind and is the 16th generation tea-maker in his family. He showed us around the second-floor exhibition room, pointing at the achievements of him and his ancestors with much proud.

Incredible place! I took the upstairs tour and did the matcha making experience which I highly recommend. Toby on staff was very personable and friendly and made the experience shine. The tea is some of the best i’ve ever had and they do everything with quality. If you’re looking for a great tea shop in Uji look no further.

We tried this place aiming for a less touristy, more authentic approach to trying matcha. The staff was very friendly and there are pictures on the menu. You can choose which quality of matcha you’d like (difference in price) which I found an interesting offering.

This is the very original Japanese family who has started green tea cultivation first time in the Japanese history. The shop owners are extremely hospitable. We have had an amazingly interesting experience in this historical shop thanks to the owners outstanding hospitality of which we will never forget as long as we live. This place should be visited not only for green tea shopping but also is it historical place. The current leading figure Mr.Kanbayashi is the 18th generation owner. This is a MUST VISIT type of please. We are deeply impressed.
