Usually not listed as one of the main attractions of Kamakura this was very much the highlight for me.
The garden is absolutely stunning and is a sight to behold, check the photos or go yourself if you have the chance.
Despite going on a weekend with great weather it really wasn't crowded at all, which was great

Visited on June 21, 2023 (Wednesday). I went to see hydrangea. I arrived at 11am. So many flowers and also so many people. Even on weekday morning, it was quite crowded because now is the peak season for hydrangea. No waiting for ticket purchase (¥500 for adults). I felt it was less crowded at lunch time so I could enjoy the flowers and take pictures.

A nice place to visit. An iconic image (I can't photo it to do justice) but definitely worth a visit.

A very popular place to visit during hydrangea season. Expect crowds especially if you come on a weekend. I went on a Monday and it was still crowded though and I just happened to be there when a TV station was filming. There are tons of flowers and other things to see. A must visit if you go to Kamakura during Hydrangea season. You won’t be disappointed.

Visited on 6/22/23
It is few mins away from Kita Kamakura Station.
The entrance fee is 500 yen as of the time of our visit.
We enjoyed the beauty of Ajisai despite the gloomy weather.
Since it is Hydrangea season, there were many people who visited even if it is a weekday.
There is a sign not to touch the flowers so take note of that.
The road going to this place is narrow, so kindly walk on the side and give way to the vehicles passing by.

Fully blooming is around Mid June. It’s a beautiful walk path, however the path is narrow and very crowded during the hydrangeas season

I've been there at spring and had beatiful weather, so all views were just magnificent. I could have sit in meditation room with round window for hours, but unfortunately did not have so much time. Had to pay the entrance fee (500 yen), but good weather and blooming trees recompensated me all this. Too bad that one little rabbit did not have good mood for playing, but on the other hand who would have when hundreds of people just pass by and make pictures ;)

Hydrangea flowers are the charm here. The hall window view is the most attracted spot.
No parking for private vehicles.

Also, known as the Hydrangea Temple - literally thousands of hydrangeas fill the paths throughout the temple grounds. During this season the temple is crowded and the best time to visit is right when they open at 9am. The entrance is ¥500 and a separate viewing fee ¥500 for the Japanese Iris garden. A parking lot is NOT provided and you will need to find parking on the main road and walk to the shrine.

This shrine has various fields for different flowers, so check which ones are in season of you are particularly going for the flowers. In mid November, there weren't many, but still it was a lovely place that I recommend. There are also many stairs, so factor that in when you plan your visit.

This temple is very beautiful particularly in Sakura season. The Shidarezakura with zen garden will take your breath away !! Highly recommended to try their cafe . You need to stop at kitakamakura station. Photographed on 4/4/2022

Meigetsu-in is absolutely beautiful! We saw the hydrangeas and the garden behind the main building. Definitely worth the trip. It was a little busy even during the week, but we were still able to enjoy the visit.

A truly phenomenal temple to visit and just enjoy the peace and tranquility. A large variety of flowers and temples to take in. Many picturesque views and the room with the circle in the wall is great. An instant favorite of my wife and I! There’s also a “Alice in Wonderland” theme as you walk throughout the compound.

Absolutely beautiful temple with the garden that is very well taken care of. Though this temple gets massively busy in the hydrangea season (June) it is absolutely beautiful but make sure to go around the time they close so there are less people than earlier time.

History, relaxing atmosphere, emblematic views and surprisingly not as crowded as some other places nearby

A very beautiful place right now. Fill with Hydrangea now. Entrance fees is at ¥500 for adult. It can be very crowded now as it’s the peak for the flowers. Nonethess a really beautiful place to spend the afternoon.

My favorite temple in Japan!
Entrance is 500¥. Sadly the hydrangea had already withered and the spiders came out in early october.
We were the only visitors and enjoyed the tranquility in the gardens.
Goshuin was sadly closed.

Kamakura is one of the most popular day trip destinations for tourists, uniting the beauty of nature with the majesty of history. It’s a stunning place to explore breathtaking dress of blossoming hydrangea flowers during rainy season.

Meigetsu-in temple or also known as Hydrangea temple (Ajisai-dera) is a famous spot to appriciate the beauty Hydrangeas. Meigetsu-in also houses the tomb of Hojo Tokiyori, a former supreme ruler of Japan who use Kamakura as his base.
History: Meigetsu-in was found in the year 1160 as "Meigetsu-an" (Bright Moon Hermitage) by Yamanouchi Tsunetoshi for the repose of the soul of his father Toshimichi, who died in the Battle of Heiji the Previous year.
In 1256, Hojo Tokiyori chose this site for the construction of a Buddhist temple called Shimyoji (northwest of present-day Meigetsu-in). At the age of 30, Tokiyori entered the Buddhist priesthood under the name Kakuryobo Dosu, when he died seven years later he composed the following poem while in sitting meditation posture.

Admission is 500 yen for adults and 300 for kids. The atmosphere is tranquil and natural and it makes for a good walk. If you have kids、they may enjoy spotting the hidden bunny statues throughout the temple grounds. They even have 3 pet bunnies for you to see!
