Came for Corbs but end up fall for the artworks, did not expect Monet’s /on the boat/ so much more impressed than in digital image, amount of works well worth the 250 yen (college) ticket

A lovely gallery with lots of exceptional art on display.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable about fine art, but the experience of wandering the gallery was still interesting and engaging. The design and architecture of the building is striking and interesting in itself, with a pleasant atmosphere. Quiet and relaxed, but not stuffy or uptight. A good balance.

The entrance fee was free due to a promotion being run on Sunday by Kawasaki, which was a welcome surprise too.

The staff were friendly and helpful, whilst also being unobtrusive.

Recommended as an addition to the other excellent museums in the area.

I went primarily to see the building because it was designed by Le Corbusier. The Cubism exhibition was on and it was great. The permanent collection is small but worth a visit as it may be small but it packs a punch. Get off at Ueno Station. Check out Rodin's Thinker and Gates of Hell on the way in.

Highly recommended! This museum itself is a recognized world heritage, and it has a full room dedicated to Monet and Rodin. The collection is rich and versatile, featuring works from the Renaissance to Picasso and Miro. You’re allowed to take photos without flashlights or tripods. A must-go in the Ueno park region.

Art museum not to be missed. On permanent exhibition are paintings organised by middle ages, 19th, and 20th century. You can spot a few Manets, Picassos, and I think 1 each of Cezanne, Van Gogh and Degas. Quite a few Rodin pieces - don't miss The Gates of Hell (at the forecourt plaza, before you enter the museum) and The Thinker (within the permanent exhibition), and other Rodin pieces in the foyer before you enter into the permanent exhibition. Do check in on what is the special exhibition - it is at this time of writing on the Cubist movement. The lockers area is on the right hand side after you enter the museum, and beyond that is the museum cafe (expect a queue on busy days like weekends). I spent about 2 hours at the permanent exhibition here, just cursorily viewing. So you could take longer for serious viewing.

Only ¥500 to enter this wonderful art museum! I kind of regret that didn’t have so much time spending in this place like it has to be. If you come to Ueno and don’t know where to go just go see the exhibition in the place.

A beautiful permanent exhibition, with paintings from the Middle Ages, also Renaissance masters and Dutch landscape painters, to impressionism and cubism. If you like art, I heartily recommend that you visit the museum.

Also, very kind people and employees!!!

All in all, 5 stars out of five!!!

Incredible museum designed by Le Corbusier with an extensive collection of Western masters (and one Foujita painting in exhibition) from names such as Monet, Manet, Godin, Gauguin, Reubens, and Renoir.

However, I would suggest visiting on a weekday or perhaps at the beginning of the day to get a smaller crowd. Despite going in the early afternoon there was already quite a crowd inside (although no wait to get in) with both local and international visitors which makes it a little more difficult if you would like to appreciate the art in your own time.

Definitely a place I will now visit every time I am in Japan.

A good collection of western paintings. They have Monet, Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh to name a few of those who are commonly known but many more spanning centuries. Enjoyed my time there.

We went to the special exhibition first to see the art of Spanish artists. It was very clean and quiet there. It gives more time to reflect and be more insightful of the art in front of you. Their permanent collection is big. There are many paintings and sculptures of different artists. It can get a little bit crowded but it doesn't diminish the atmosphere at all.

Their cafe is really good, too. We had the tea time set and their cakes were delicious. They also had a special course depending on the special exhibition and in this case, it was the Spanish course.

The National Museum of Western Art of Tokyo Ueno Park is one of the most visited and praiseworthy museums of Japan. It is evolved primarily with the private collection of one of the early Japanese business maestros Kojiro Matsukata, the then head of Kawasaki Group including K Line Shipping. The museum itself now a UNESCO heritage which is constructed around 1960s as per the design of famous architect Le Corbusier. I liked the museum though the collections does not match many European museums. The management is smart. It has a souvenir shop and a cafe. Along with impressive permanent collections, it regularly organises temporary exhibitions.

The Cubism exhibition was on, which was interesting to find out how it started and progressed over the years. The permanent exhibitions were fantastic and spaced out well to deal with large crowds.

The National Museum of Western Art is a great place to see Western art from the Renaissance to the early 20th century. It has paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings by famous artists like Rubens, Monet, Rodin, and Picasso. The museum building, designed by Le Corbusier, is also a World Heritage Site. The museum is in Ueno Park, a beautiful and relaxing spot.

The museum also has special exhibitions throughout the year, featuring works from other museums and collections.

The admission fee is reasonable and the staff are friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this museum to art and culture lovers. It is a must-see in Tokyo.

It is a good art museum where the entrance fee of 500 yen is not a waste at all. I only saw permanent exhibitions this time. It took nearly three hours to see the permanent exhibition. There are many exhibition works, and the exhibition space is very large. Therefore, I recommend you to wear comfortable shoes when watching. If you visit on weekdays rather than weekends or holidays, you will be able to relax and concentrate. If I visit Tokyo next time, I want to visit again.

It is a national art museum housing Western paintings and sculptures. The building was designed by his student Kunio Maekawa based on Le Corbusier's basic design. The collection is based on the Matsukata Collection, a private collection that has been updated. The permanent collection includes many famous works by Monet, Renoir, and others, yet the museum is very inexpensive and well worth the price of admission.

Great art museum in Ueno, for the small fee of Y500 for the permanent exhibition. Good range of artworks ranging from Monet, Manet, Picasso, etc. A must visit if you have an interest in western art!

About the best value for money kinda museum I have ever visited. Some of their collections, though I may not know of their history in detail, were utterly breathtaking, and to be able to see such historic art pieces personally is an absolutely invaluable experience. Do also visit the gift shop at the museum for post cards of your favourite paintings. I won't spoil your experience by posting the pictures of the paintings. It's really for you to see yourselves. It'll really be worth your while.

Definitely worth to go here if you can get the student discount. They have some nice pieces, lots of biblical imagery, some greek mythology, lots of landscapes and a temporary exhibition on "villains" touching on some darker subjects. Pictures are mostly allowed under some reasonable restriction, lots of paintings have (English) subtexts. Plenty of restrooms and sitting opportunities, not crowded during the week.

This museum is the only building in Japan designed by Le Corbusier, the celebrated Swiss-French architect. It has now been beautifully restored as part of its listing as a World Heritage Site including dozens of his finest creations.

Apart from architecture, the museum boasts a collection of hundreds of paintings from famous Western artists like Monet, Cezanne, Manet, Miro, Pollock and more. Entrance costs a reasonable 500 yen.

Only building in Japan by the founding figure of modernism Le Corbusier. One of the architect’s 17 UNESCO sites. Decent collection including renaissance, impressionist and early modern works. A cafe in the back has a nice view of an interior courtyard.
