Located next to the Zenkoji Temple, this traditional ryokan is all in Japanese style with tatami mat floors and futon bedding. 🙂

The staff was super friendly with top notch hospitality. We booked in the kaiseki dinner and breakfast for our 1 night stay. The food was delicious (especially dinner) and beautifully presented. 😍

Amazing place to be at in general. Nagano gives you the traditional Japanese experience and Matsuya does not disappoint. When we got to the hotel, we had to take out shoes off as is the traditional Japanese custom. The lady at the desk showed us to our room and also showed us where the public bath is. There is an ac in the room so you can control the temperature. Our room has a nice view of the street so it really feels like you’re deep in Japanese land. This is also a nice location as you can go outside and walk to temples and other attractions.

Could not be a better location in Nagano! On the street leading to Zenkoji temple, lined with soba, gelato, gift shops. Staff all very kind. We did not have dinner there, but that part of town shuts down early, so while we found a delicious alternative I’d eat there on a return trip. The breakfast was lovely, very traditional. So glad we stayed here! Only other tip—search “matsuya ryokan parking” if you are driving.

In terms of location, you really can’t beat Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan. It’s in the heart of the old town with plenty of incredible restaurants, temples, museums, bars etc. all within walking distance. The room and facilities (onsen) were clean, comfortable and well designed. The staff were welcoming and accommodating- allowing my partner and I to check in to our room early, store our luggage as we went exploring the next day and even assisted in getting my passport back to me after I left it in Hakuba. I would absolutely stay here again

Love to stay here for 2 day. Very comfy in traditonal house(Ryokan) and room. We booked breakfast oncewhich like Kaiseki(rice, soup, and many small dishes, 1,650 yen / person incl tax) very delicious and all staffs are kind. We have private bath in our room but also visit public bath. Well managed and clean, operating 7-9AM in the morning/16-22PM at night. Location is best for who plan to visit Zenkoji (10m by walk). Snowing all day during the day, so enjoy traditional scenery outside👍🏻

We were there off season, early October. Great location. Great hospitality. Wonderful Japanese style breakfast with great presentation. One minus tho was bath was always extremely hot, not enough cold running water to mix with the direct 80C flowing onsen water.

We were met by the owners at the entrance who were incredibly polite. Their son/manager was able to converse in English. The room was clean and breakfast was amazing. Highly recommended.

We had the best time here. RIGHT on the main street by the temple. So quiet and quaint. 10 mins by bus to the city. Lovely owners. GORGEOUS onsen with the facilities. Cannot wait to stay again. Such a great place

Lovely staff, cute place, nice rooms with nice touches, and literally the best location possible less than a block from zenkoji.
The baths were a bit small, really only room for 3 people with their legs crossed. But breakfast, rooms, the tea, and the sweet family running the place were all great

Rooms are clean and large. Great location. Thre owners were tremendously helpful despite the language gaps. Was very touched that the grandpa actually went with me in my car to show me where to park and how to walk back to the Inn. They even called the taxi for us when we were heading back to Nagano station. Location wise, it's fantastic and very central to the key sites to visit in Nagano with great views. We were blessed to witness both Nagano in both normal and winter states as snow fell overnight.

A Wonderfull place settled in the middle of the Zenkoji temple area. Expérience a traditionnal stay in an old ryokan ran in a family way. Feel welcome AT everytime, the staff does its best to be understood in english and is really helpfull caring for every request. They also warm your room before you get home. WE felt in it like at home and already miss this ryokan and Nagano !

The building is old, but well maintained. It's a straight 20 minute walk from Nagano station and is located really centrally to a lot of sightseeing spots and tourist attractions. The staff were super welcoming and accommodating. It had a real family run vibe. They were very non-Japanese guest friendly, including tattoos at their hot spring bath. The bath wasn't huge, it could fit four adult men in at once, if you are comfortable being close to each other. The room was comfortable and warm. Towels, razors and hairbrushes were available, but you need to bring other toiletries yourself. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone!

Can't go wrong with this place if you want to experience an authentic Japanese ryokan: it's an old wooden house just steps away from a huge Buddhist temple, service is great, and the shared bathhouse is a wonderful way to end a long day. Our room didn't have a bathroom, but there was a shared one just outside and using it was never a problem. We tried the kaiseki dinner as well, and it was a ton of food, a must try at least once.

We loved this ryokan and wished we stayed for more than one night! Hosts were very welcoming, the place was clean, and the rooms were inviting. I specifically remember that the mattresses and comforters were so lovely and comfortable, and the refreshing hot tea that was waiting in the room for us when we arrived.

Wife, daughter and I stayed two nights in a four futon room with bathroom which was excellent.
Dinners and breakfast were many courses and delicious.
Finally, the owners and staff were fantastic and very helpful.
The best stay of our holiday in Japan.

I love this place! The hospitality alone is enough reason to stay here. The traditional Japanese experience is amazing. The food is remarkable, and the location is phenomenal. There is also a small onsen on the first floor, which is a great way to finish a long day of walking and eating. I enthusiastically recommend this ryokan, and I look forward to coming back!

We stayed at the Matsuyama Ryokan for one night with dinner and breakfast. We were warmly greeted and shown our room and the baths before being made tea. Traditional dinner was delicious - though there were a few items that were a bit of a challenge for our western taste! The tub was a great way to wind down and we slept really well. The location is amazing - on the site of yoshimitsu Honda's home, very close to the temples. I'd recommend this to any westerners staying as a great way to experience a little traditional Japanese culture, food and hospitality.

Nice place in Nagano city. Clean rooms, quiet location, friendly staff. Ryokan is located near temple so there are not many eating/drinking locations nearby, most are within a 10 - 15 minute walk. In a nice quiet neighborhood, rooms are large (8 tatami mats), clean, and in good condition. Staff is very friendly although most are very limited in English. This place is a great staging location for exploring Nagano area such as snow monkeys. You are near to bus lines and maybe 30 minute straight walk to train station and downtown.

This place in an absolute jem. Situated on the market street leading to Zenkoji Temple, it is a very old building that has seen quite a few renovations. The hotel has many winding thin corridors feels very authentic. A really cool experience for anyone unfamiliar with traditional Japanese accommodation. The only difficulty was parking. It's central location makes it difficult to park. There is no driving access to the front of the hotel.
