Takachiho Gorge Footpath

The gorge is a really nice place to visit. They have a boat that you can book online, 30mins for ¥5100, you can also book on the spot. But it's better to book in advance. It's a nice way to see the gorge and waterfall up close.

The walkway is partially closed due to typhoon damage. Restoration is expected to be completed next year. Car park 1, which is close to the boat booking centre, costs ¥500 per entry, not many slots available , you may have to wait for places.

This landmark is a very tranquil and picturesque spot that is worth the trip to this prefecture. I'd even argue the trip to Kyushu is worth it, even if you only visit here.

Parking was ¥500 near the main lookout points where you can take some amazing photos. I got there late in the day and wasn't bothered to spend over ¥4000 yen for the 30 minute boat ride in the gorge itself, though if you're there with your romantic partner, then it's probably worth the money.

A large portion of the walkway next to the gorge is under repairs , however the main sections from which you want to take photos were all available when I visited.

The place is absolutely gorgeous. The boats filled with amateurs like me can be a little haphazard in the gorge 🤭. Cost Y5100 to rent for 30mins. Boat allows up to 3 persons. If possible, book online at least 3 days before your planned trip. We were lucky to get a boat immediately because we were there at 9am.

Really cool spot and the gorge looks really amazing. I took a tour bus to get here. Probably best to book your boat if you plan to try. I did not but kinda wish I did. It was also funny to watch people slowly crash into each other and the walls

The gorge is a beautiful site even from afar. Unfortunately, we were not able to view it from the footpath as it was closed for construction (this will probably be done next year). While we did want to take the boat ride, when we saw what we might see from a viewing point, we decided against it. Shots for you to make your decision below

We booked our tickets in advance from the website, it was very easy to do. We drove here and arrived 10 minutes after our booking time but were still able to board. The parking right at the pier is 500yen, but it is small. The boat is a little hard to row, but once you get the hang of it the photos you take will be absolutely gorgeous!

For some reson the parking attended at the front pick and choose what cars can drive in and out. Some people ignored him and just drove up. We used the free car park down the road and walked up instead.

Water fall was great and the park is peaceful. Worth the trip.

Takachiho George indeed is a beautiful place with a picturesque-looking River Canton and waterfall. 5 stars rating go to the beautiful place but not for the experience. Visitors can enjoy and have a close-up experience with the waterfall through boating activity. The rental of the boat is approximately 4,000 yen depending on the date.

There are also a few souvenir shops nearby with a restaurant that serves noodles from a bamboo slide. The overall experience at Takachiho Gorge was just average because it was crowded. The observation platform is narrow and crowded with people. Everyone was busy taking photos on a road where cars pass by because that particular spot captured beautiful pics of the waterfall.

So beautiful the water so clean. Row boat fun. Make sure you get there early for parking ¥500. Book online for tickets note they sell out fast.

Stunning spot. Worth the 2 hour drive to me from our accommodation. Nice drive along the way. As well even in our crazy slow Kei car.

If you want to do the boats book ahead or plan to get there early and wait.

If you want to rent a boat, have to make reservations in advance because there’s no same day ticket selling. Many parking lot available. I visited here in October 2023, nice weather and clear sky:)

One of the highlights of my trip to Miyazaki. This is a place I gave up visiting on my first visit to Miyazaki 10 years ago, as I didn't rent a car because public transportation to this place was very inefficient.

1. Boat and Parking
A small boat ride in the canyon costs 5,100 yen on weekends and 4,100 yen on weekdays for 30 minutes. Online reservations are available from 1 week prior to your visit, and if 2 days prior to your visit, online reservations close and are converted to tickets for visiting travelers.
Among the 3 parking lots(free, 300Y, 500Y, you have to pay a fee of 500 yen to park at the 1st parking lot, it is convenient because there is a boat ticket office inside the parking lot. However, the parking lot accommodates only about 30 cars, so it is not easy to find a spot. You have to wait until a space becomes available.
The small boat, which you must row yourself, can accommodate up to 3 adults or 4 including children.
It wasn't difficult to get a boat ticket in January, but finding a space in parking lot 1 seemed to be more difficult.

2. Ticket Reservation
Even if you reserve a ticket online, you must stop by the boat office and exchange it for a numbered ticket. If you go straight to the boat landing, you have to climb up the steep stairs again, so don't forget to exchange it.
If you haven't booked tickets in advance, it's a good idea to secure your tickets when you arrive at the ticket office. For tickets purchased on-site, you cannot specify a time and you must ride immediately after purchasing the ticket. In January, if you arrive early in the morning even on a weekend, there are still a lot of tickets left, but they are often sold out during the warm season.

3. Overall Review
Although the view from the boat is beautiful, I think the price of 5,100 yen (weekends) for 30 minutes is a bit expensive. Even if you don't take a boat, you can enjoy the scenery from the bridge. I was worried that 30 minutes would be short, but when you actually row the boat, the section the boat can operate on is very short, so you don't need more time. Takachiho Gorge is very beautiful and well worth a visit, but I'm not sure it's worth paying the price to dodge other boats in the narrow canyon.

Beautiful scenery! The boat price has increased to about 5000 yen (accommodate 3 pax only for 30 min). The boat slots are limited. Had to wait 3 hours for the earliest slot. Not sure if one can book in advance. The hike around the gorge takes about an hour.

Beautiful gorge, amazing landscape of natural scenery ! Joined a bus tour from Kumamoto, well organised with tasty beef lunch set provided.

A must visit place. Beautifu surrounding nature. Boat rowing was fun. Better visit this place on weekday because less people.

A beautiful display of nature. It is almost as picturesque as the photos. Parking was filled to the brim, and the boat rentals had increased prices since the last time I visited.

Spectacular gorge with a sheer vertical cliff surface facing a number of crashing waterfalls, into the slowly flowing body of water below. Lots of viewing points along the route. Lots of touristy shops and eateries as well.

Really cool spot, would definitely recommend calling in or refreshing the webpage for boats right when they release. Great spot to drive out and spend half a day.

Nice scenery place. For the boat ride, advise to do advance online reservation at least 2 days to a week in advance.

What a magical sight. Book your tickets early via the website for the boat : it got sold out just hours after release. If you walk in, its a 3 hour wait for a free slot.

Only one person gets to row the boat and you can’t change roles, so I’ld say give it to the experienced kayaker haha.
