South Tetrakionion

What you see here today are the remains of a monumental structure that marked the important intersection between the Cardo Maximus and the South Decumanus.

The four bases in the middle are the remains of the free-standing tetrakonia erected around 150 AD. Each base supported four granite Corinthian columns. During the Byzantine period these columns were moved and reused at the Octagonal Church outside the North Gate.

In its original design, three doors giving acces to two-storey shops pierced every side of the four sides of the plaza.
