Sasso Caveoso

Matera is one of the oldest city in the world 9,000years old with an amazing history. It's pure magic stepping back in time. The center of the city is very modern and has many restaurants and shops. There is a Salvatore Dali museum. To understand the history read, Carlos Levi's book, "Christ stopped in Eboli".

An absolute must see. Hard to imagine people living like this. The site is expansive and provides plenty of opportunities to wander around.

Impressive and beautiful place, great to wander around. If you can, arrive in the late afternoon, less people and great lighting for the pictures

Matera is magical. It may be one of the oldest continually occupied cities in the world. Settled by the Romans since 251 BC. Stepping into the Sassi area is a trip back in time. It is now a grey monument to many cultures. Families lived in caves without running water until 1960s when people moved away. It feels like a ghost town that is now being reborn. It is breathtaking at night and has around 20 churches many cut out of stone. For 2019 it was named the European Capital if Culture. Its moods change constantly with light and weather. Magnificent in simplicity and every view breathtaking.

Sasso Caveoso was an excellent historical place to see, to breath, to take in the warm dry air.
It smells and feels like history, going back in time in a time capsule. Truly magnificent.
The only problem is with the entitled tourists that I get to see once in a while.

A brief history:

After the war, therefore, the Sassi Caveosi were completely abandoned.

And they have remained so to this day. A large part is still uninhabited today.

But perhaps it is precisely this that gives the Caveoso an innate charm

The Sasso Caveoso of Matera contains the architectural and social history of the people of Matera.

It is the southernmost district of the historic center of the Sassi which, compared to the other 2, Civita and Sasso Barisano, is more or less the same as it once was.

Architectural features
The houses of the Caveoso have been dug into the rock, like all the older ones of the Sassi.

The living environment, therefore, was essentially underground, and had no windows except for a small window on the entrance door.

Beautiful place - you need to take a longer walk just around the old part and visit the caves. You can enter some of them without paying extra (near the convicinio di Sant'Antonio). The view is amazing from this hill and you can see the Sassi from different perspective.

Absolutely amazing. Have never been anywhere like this..simply awesome. Historical content outstanding. We had a wonderful time.
