The walks and many many steps you will take will bring you to such different views.
There are lots of small places to have a drink or eat something.
When it is really hot weather, just do the big flat outer walk tour and don't go up and down the small steps.
Enjoy the many great views.

Everyone visited this magnificent city had plenty of great things to say. Let me focus on the how amazing the sunset was. It was almost aurora like sunset that I’ve never witnessed before. The transition from purple to burnt orange to dark blue within the span of 30 minutes was one of the most spectacular scene I have ever seen.

Of course, Matera is a lot more than great sunset. Every corner and every street are so uniquely scenic. It feels like you are time traveling 2000 years backward. It’s so surreal that I can’t think of adjectives to describe it. I am glad I am not the only one with this observation. Mel Gibson chose this city to film his masterpiece ‘Passion of Christ’ which did not require much of CG to recreate 1st century vibe.

And no wonder the most recent 007 movie was filmed here. The director of this movies must had the same impression I had on this ancient city.

Culinary scene shall not be disregarded. The local olive oil is magnificent. And the Matera bread is one of a kind. I had the most simple sandwich made by a teenager, consisted of local tomato, olive and Matera bread. And I have to confess it was the best sandwich I ever had.

This is the most interesting, intriguing and magnificent European city I ever visited. This city has to be professional photographer’s heaven. Although I am not a professional photographer, it was heaven to me during my brief stay here back in 2020. Can’t wait to revisit.

A must go if you are in this area. This UNESCO world heritage is just fabulous. At day, and even more at night. You can easily spent several hours strolling through the narrow, steep and old streets, while wondering about the way this “town” was built and even more kept alive.

Very unique experience, interresting architecture. While walking you can sometimes feel as if you are in a different century with all the old buildings. Lots of lovely small restaurants and art shops.

A very special experience. Spend at least two days here so you can enjoy the sunset and the sunrise over the Sassi. Walk around the streets, discover the caves, eat at the small restaurants and think about the evolution of human kind. It's all there!

Walking through the Sassi di Matera feels like stepping back in time. The caves, carved into the limestone rock, have been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times, making Matera one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. As you wander through the narrow alleys and labyrinthine streets, you'll encounter ancient dwellings, churches, and cisterns, all carved into the rock.

One of the most striking features of the Sassi is the way in which they blend seamlessly into the natural landscape. The caves seem to emerge organically from the rocky cliffs, creating a breathtaking and otherworldly scene. At night, when the caves are illuminated, the effect is truly magical.

Exploring the Sassi di Matera is like embarking on a journey through history. You can visit ancient churches and crypts, such as the Church of Santa Maria de Idris and the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, which feature stunning frescoes and architecture dating back centuries.

What an incredible place! We drove into the new part of Matera and I was worried that it was what we had come so far for, but then the host of our Airbnb met us and she walked us around the corner where I caught my first view of the Sassi. It was one of those breathtaking moments and I knew it would definitely be worth the travel to stay here. And it has been absolutely amazing.

Wow. Cannot describe what a beautiful place this is. Spent a few days here exploring it and still only saw about 60% of it. So many places to see and has some lovely bars and restaurants. The days flew by and you feel like it's not a real place.

So much to see on this oldest city in Italy. Also one can see the oldest first initial church carved out in the rocks of Matera.

The enchanting city of Matera is something unique. If someone hasn't visited the city, they can not understand the feeling you get when you walk through its streets.

It is one of the oldest settlements in Europe protected by Unesco heritage.

In the old town, you will find unique corners, beautiful houses, mysterious alleys, and neighborhoods full of history.

You will love this place as long as you feel like walking in the narrow streets of the city.

It's definitely one of the places you should see even once, it's a lifetime experience...!!!

Very beautiful place worth to visit and to walk around! However, entrance fees (5 EUR for adults) to enter some of the cave apartments but this is not a must from my perspective.

Just enjoy the historical houses and lanes from the outside and the nice view on The Valley and caves on the opposite! 😊

Incredible place to visit. The movie James Bond 007 No Time To Die brought us here. We didn't know this place existed until we saw the setting in the movie. We stayed in a cave room for 3 nights, and it was awesome. The locals are lovely and helpful. There are also fantastic restaurants in the area. I highly recommend a visit to this historic place.

It's a special place where you can see how it was a long time ago. Life in caves with animals... Sightseeing is amazing. A cozy small mini family museum inside of one of these houses full of old stuff met us a coolness. It was exactly needed because of 40*C outside.

A must visit UNESCO world heritage site!
Did you know that the latest James Bond was filmed in Matera?
The town has a very unique hierarchical architecture. It’s really fun to get lost in the alleys and discover the wonders there. It’s interesting to think so many people still live in Matera.
