Monumento a Domenico Modugno

Absolutely an amazing place to visit. Worth it 💯

Polignano a Mare is very proud of the great Domenico Modugno and with good reason. This statue has him in the famous pose you may have seen captured in black and white film when he sang the chorus of his most famous song Nel blu dipinto di blu, which was an international hit in 1958. When you look at the statue, you can imagine him singing “Volareee, oh, oh, cantareee, oh oh oh oh!” Not far away you can also see the house where he lived, and as you stroll down Via Roma, also nearby, the full lyrics are displayed in lights above it. It’s fun to see how many people sing as they walk along, mostly to themselves softly but I have heard some sing it in full voice and pretty well. So, recently there was a beautiful renovation and expansion of the piazza where the statue is and it a great place to go and practice the Italian art of “Dolce far Niente”

Contemporary statue with beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea. Newly upgraded and nicely appointed piazza. People climb up to take a photo with Domenico Modugno - some don't look like they should be climbing up there. Maybe some stable stairs should be added.

Pugliano a Mare is a beautiful village at the coast near Bari. A must see place! It was empty in February but must be crowded in summer! So nice.

I have no idea who Domenico was, but they gave him an awesome statue, overlooking the sea, and plenty of comfortable benches to sit and enjoy it all.

Was in reconstruction when I visited, but it's a really fresh kinda artwork.
