The church stands right on the beach (only some steps to the sea), the only one I found open.
Free parking in front of it; according to the guest book, tourists are not rare either.

Free and short stop. Cute church to walk around and you can see the beach from the parking lot. Passed many horses on the way up.

It was a beautiful church that was open to visitors/tourists at the time of visit. So it's the first church that I've been inside, in Iceland! Yes, it is located near the beach with dramatic scenery. 🌍🇮🇸🙏🏾😍❤

This was an unexpected pleasure while driving the Golden Circle. We wanted to see the beach and pulled off and found the window lit up beautifully. The history and atmosphere are compelling reason enough to stop. The statue is beautiful as well.

It must have been hard living here on this windswept coast back in the day

Strandarkirkja is one of Iceland's richest churches. This is because it's considered a miracle church. People come from all over the world to take vows and bring gifts in return for a miracle. The angel slightly northwest of the church is the angel that guided the sailors to shore. These weren't just any sailors. They were Icelanders who had been working for the king in Norway. They had done such a great job that he gave them gifts, including timber to bring to Skálholt. The trip back to Iceland threatened their lives and in a desperate prayer they promised to raise a church wherever God would take them. The angel appeared and took them to the shore below the church.
There is a lot of history surrounding this church and the supernatural stories still continue to this day.

A very pretty traditional wood church. Seemed that it is always open to go in. Right next to the ocean as well.

Fascinating , lost alone at the end of a long dust road , near the furious ocean …. Something magical with its small old cemetery

The main tip is to look for the seal on the ocean side.

Standing on a hill on a quiet road. Thus unassuming church has more to offer than what meets the eyes. Discover its secrets yourself. Respectfully please.

Picturesque little church within a very short walk to the shoreline.

There is something so striking about the look of simplicity on the churches in Iceland. Strandarkirkja is one of many such churches. Its got a dual shade of black and white, located just a couple of minutes off Road 427. There is an eye catching landscape that outlines the frame of view around the church. The sea is very close but nothing too special on that side.

Stunning coastline with a beautiful church. At the crossroads towards the church I recommend a local campsite and taste the beer in an inconspicuous home restaurant.

Most peaceful place in Island! Beautiful and so quiet … + a seal colony in the sea rocks just in front ! Worth the detour !

Quiet place with nice views over the ocean. It is easily accessible by car since the road leading up to the church is paved
