Really cool! We went here right after the 4.9 earthquake to see what the place looked like and it seemed pretty much unchanged. Helmets are a must here. The place is dangerous and should be respected, but well worth the effort to experience this natural wonder

The caves are fun - if you have proper head lights (or enough juice in your phone battery) - but the surrounding geological structures are even more impressive. Worth the visit for the landscape - even if you don't go to the cave at all.

You can perform a self guided tour with the right equipment! Proper headlamps and ideally a helmet too. Good walking shoes and so. There are places where you can only pass through on all fours if you want to explore the whole cave.

Note: If you head in left, there should be a rough map of the cave on the wall. Good to take note of! If you do not see a map on the wall, try the other side of the opening to have a reference.

Absolutely loved this tour of the Icelandic Lava Caves.. bus was very clean & comfortable, guide was super knowledgeable & friendly.. one of the best ~ a must see & do adventure when in Iceland ~ be prepared for crawling through some confined spaces & dress warmly & personally I would recommend RAIN PANTS, warm jacket & gloves or mittens. Lava can be quite sharp so take caution when crawling on it.. very cool stuff to experience in the caves!! DO THIS TOUR WHEN IN ICELAND!🇮🇸❤🌋💙

like the man said below, its definitely a cave. headlamps are a necessity, helmets are gonna help if you dont wanna accidentally bonk your head but not required if you have spatial awareness.

Really cool lava cave open to the public for exploration. You'll definitely want a hard hat and some lights. I'd recommend long pants and waterproof gear as well since there are lots of little drips and dampness within the cave. You can go pretty far, about a kilometer, if you're willing to do a little crawling through collapsed areas (it opens back up into larger rooms once you get through). Highly recommend!

What a great tour. We went in January 2019 and were the only two people with our guide from Adventure Vikings. Since we are both geologists it was a great tour for us but it would be good for anyone with an interest in caves, lava tubes, etc. Be prepared for some stooping and crawling or walking planks.

Followed a guide get inside it, sometimes need to crawl to move in. Also have some small caves inside it. There was a lamb got lost and dead inside. Great experience exploring the lava cave. Respect the nature.

Accessible cave with several deep corridors to explore. Navigation can be tricky. Consider bringing a helmet. Be vigilant if exploring alone.

Drove to the site headed westbound from the 1. Highly recommend a 4x4 if driving from in from that direction as the roads were not as good a shape versus coming eastbound off of the 42 however it's more than manageable during summer conditions without. Lava tube itself is located a few minutes away from the parking grounds. Strongly advise the use of a guide if you choose to explore these caves. Spent only ten minutes exploring the initial openings of the cave before I realized how ill equipped I was to continue further as a solo adventurer. Hard hat, flashlights and warm clothes should be the bare minimum.

Interesting cave to explore. Only did the shorter option but have a lovely experienced and funny Icelandic guide.

Relatively easy to find. There is a nice path near the road that clearly leads you to the cave. Inside the cave was a map. We didn't end up doing the whole cave because the we were a bit spooked but I would definitely want to come back.

A very thrilling cave to explore. I would highly recommend a guided tour instead of venturing alone and bringing hard hats with helmet lights.
Well worth a visit!

Beautiful cave BUT it is not open to public as previously stated in several reviews. You need a permission to enter and you should know the cave before entering. We have several "adventurers" getting lost in the cave every year.

Easy self guide Cave. Road is now a dead end with small car park. Path to Cave entrance. Take left side to enter. Easy to follow, few places you need to crawl. On way out don't go left at metal chains and you'll come out of the other Cave entrance which was on your right when you entered. Strong head torch needed and helmet recommended.
