This campsite is absolutely perfect! The views provided by the land are stunning and peaceful and the little shops run by the siblings are very cozy and welcoming. A very authentic experience and one worth having while here in Iceland!

For me, this was the best camping experience in Iceland. While there are certainly more astonishing places in terms of scenery, this location stood out as the best for camping. The best part is that it's entirely free to camp here. However, it's essential to show appreciation and support the maintenance by leaving a generous tip in the donation box. The owner and his sister (if I understood correctly) are the ones responsible for keeping this place running. They also run a delightful little café that serves tasty cakes and coffee, and surprisingly, they even have a thrift shop in this remote location, which we absolutely loved.

If you're planning to visit the volcano in 2023, I highly recommend considering this spot as your sleeping place after the tour. Being free and open for campers at any time makes it incredibly convenient. But, do keep in mind, the adorable arctic terns breed here, so it's crucial not to disturb them, or they might come after you with a comical vengeance! 😄

By the way, there's a lovely church nearby that is well worth a visit. Overall, I can't emphasize enough how much I recommend coming here for a unique and enjoyable camping experience in Iceland.

This place is amazing, it’s run by a sweet, selfless family. 🥰 It’s a guy (with an adorable hilarious pup 🐶 that loves chewing through his lease 🤣) and his sisters. He told me that his sister first opened the yellow restaurant in 2001 and then added on the rest. They sell the BEST food, my favourite is their hotdogs!! 🌭 There is a shower (500isk), kitchen and nice clean bathrooms. This campsite is based on donations, so please don’t forget to donate! They also sell chicken eggs from the farm next door (100isk) and have a cute book shelf you can pick a book to read that night. There is also a notebook you can leave a message in. 💗 These owners are the kindest people I’ve ever met in Iceland!! I was lucky enough to meet the brother and one of the sisters that was SO kind enough to leave the bathroom doors unlock for us. We really appreciate that! 🥹 10/10 would recommend coming to this beautiful campsite.

Love this campground. Would definitely recommend!! Only two bathrooms and one shower. You pay 500kr for the shower in the yellow building and they give you a block with a key on it. The shower room is how you’d expect at a free campground, a little dirty.

The owners are super personable, cute dog!! The hot dogs were amazing and there are other treats to have too with a little shop nextdoor.

There are lots of parking spots, great for any type of camping (car, van, camper, tent). Does get a bit windy.

Love the area around! Great owner and enough amenities for the pantry/kitchen area. Considering that the campsite is free, it was great!

BEST campsite. Free except showers which are only 500isk. Lovely and clean, toilet access. Honestly so sweet of the land owner to let travellers stay for free. Also have an adorable dog !! Highly recommended!!

There should be more free campsites in Iceland! Nice place to rest.

Nice, free camping with clean WC, hot water and a kitchen area. The kitchen area doesn't have a stove, but it protects from the wind. Showers are additionally charged 500 ISK. I recommend going for a walk to the shore, we were able to even see a seal there.

It was our first night on the island, good place to start the trip arriving to Reykjavik. Nice view, good atmosphere, warm water (paid shower), although since there are only two toilets and one shower there was usually quite a long queue. Good conditions as for the free camping. Don't forget to leave some donation in the box in the restroom.

The free camping site in Strandarkirkja, one of the best places visited in Iceland during my cycling trip here. It has everything that is necessary: toilets, showers, and a kitchen. Except the shower, everything is free but you can make a voluntary donation. And a small miracle happened: those who come here are grateful that someone thought of them, as it's not about making a profit from them. The owner, who runs a small shop with coffee, souvenirs, and sweets, a taciturn, tattooed bald guy, believes that people will appreciate his work. And he firmly sticks to the rules he's set. The shower costs 500 ISK, the rest you can have for free. And somehow he makes both ends meet, even though running such a place takes a lot of time. He found his own way of living.

"I'd like to pay for my stay." "What donation would you like to give?" The card terminal comes into play. Economic consistency replaced by trust. And even though nobody here praises it loudly, and the owner is more of a quiet type, it's a happy place. Google reviews and entries in the guestbook evidence that it's not just me talking.

How much I like it here! It's a bit of the quintessence of Iceland, the one I got to know: where bikes are rarely locked, and phones are left unattended, where what's essential is sufficient. The luxury standard is set here by the owner's sold toasts and coffee, but the sound of tourist burners in the kitchen indicates that you can do without those luxuries. People pour boiling water over their meals, some cook something: lentils, couscous, ready-made dumplings. I have two cups of instant spaghetti and a box of vanilla skyr. I spent an Epicurean day here. Highly recommend.

Very nice camping at a great location. Facilities are good and the camping is free of charge, with an honest box for anyone who wants to contribute.

This campsite operates on a donation basis, and if you opt for a private shower, it will set you back 500kr. The toilets are acceptable. However, it's crucial to be cautious about camping there when the wind speed exceeds 60km/h. The site comprises a vast, flat field devoid of hills or spots to shield your tent from the strong winds, making it less than ideal in such conditions.

Definitely one of the best places we stayed during our trip.
Beautiful and very calm camping where you can hear the ocean. Great, caring hosts that also run a nearby shop/cafe.

Camping place, toilets and running water are free (there is a donation box). You can pay for the shower in the cafe.

Great camp! Free entrance, clean toilets, quiet place. Only bathroom is for some little fee. There is small kitchen with water or you can buy coffee and waffles. Perfect for one night.

Very nice Donation-based camping ground with spots for both campervans, and people who camp in tents on the ground. 2 toilets and some charging stations are free of charge (donation box inside the WC building) and for 500 ISK you can use the showers (key provided by owner after payment). Clean and good location, can only recommend!

This was probably our favorite campground on our trip in the western climes. The way the place is run was very sympathetic to us - just not pay first expensive, but against donation. The sanitary facilities were absolutely sufficient and well-maintained and the nearby cafe with a small sales room was very delightful. We got good tips and always felt welcome.

Perfect for the start or end of your trip, coming or going to Reykjavik. Also amazingly one of the few free campsites. 🙌🙏😃

The toilets getting cleaned regularly, so if someone says it is not clean, it probably was the tourist before you who doesn't know how to take care of other people's spaces!

We think it is a great camp ground, relatively flat ground, lots of benches in-between to have a meal, small kitchen, that only has cold water, but you can always find a bit of gas or pantry stables or cutlery.

We left a few ISK, but giving our last day, we didn't have much left, so we also donated 10 EUR, hope they can exchange it!

Maybe leave a PayPal link to donate 😉😊 I am sure more of us would just send you the money to keep this free space going!

Donations- cash only!
VERY NICE place. 2 WC with warm water in at least one of them. They dont have a heater but they are well isolated.
A kitchen with 2 sinks and a lot of stuff that people left before their flight.
The environment is great!
Just be aware to not park too close to the birds!

Very generous and thoughtful to make the campsite free and donation based. Makes a lot of sense to charge if facilities are used instead of charging a flat rate regardless like most other campsites. Some folks just need a place to sleep because now it’s illegal to sleep in your vehicle other than camp sites in Iceland… Others should follow her lead. Will used this camp site exclusively from now on even if I have to drive an hour or two out of the way.
