Yes, it's still existing! The 138 years old lock gate of Govt.Dockyard at Geonkhali is still living with its glorious history.On 22nd August, 2010 when we decided to go there to take photograph, did not expect to see the mark: GOVT DOCKYARD, CALCUTTA 1872. The steel is still strong to fight the corrosion,the rivets are still robust to take the load. But the people are forgetting,forgetting the route---only Tagore can help them.He used to go through this water canal for his journey to Orissa. This is our heritage. We must save it.
Now it the Venice of Mahishadal.

Very importent canal

এই সেই খাল... হিজলী টাইড‍্যাল ক‍্যানেল...কবিগুরু রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর তাঁর সাধের '' পদ্মা " বোটে চেপে ভেসে পড়েছিলেন একদিন এই খালপথে... ঔপন্যাসিক মানিক বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় একদিন এই খাল পথে -পথেই হেঁটে বেড়িয়েছেন অদম‍্য এক আকর্ষণে...কবি জলধর সেন আবার এই খালপথ পেরিয়েই যেতেন সাহিত‍্যসভায়...
গত শতকের পূর্ব মেদিনীপুরে জলপথ হিসেবে এই খালের গুরুত্ব ছিল অপরিমেয়... আভ‍্যন্তরীন যাত্রী ও পণ্য পরিবহনে এই কৃত্রিম ( খনন করা জলপথ ) খাল এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা গ্ৰহন করেছিল।

The Hijli Tidal Canal is one of the important canals in India. Its ownership belongs to Odisha Government. Once upon a time it was a communication rout between Odisha & Kolkata. Many famous persons (like Swami Vivekananda, Raja Rammohon, Rabindranath Tagor, Mhatma Gandhi etc.) made their glorious journey through this canal.
