It was closed when we visited.
It is a temple of Gundicha Maharani, the queen of King Indradyumna the founder of the 1st Jagannath Temple. The temple is located right next to the Jagannath Temple and is popularly referred to as His aunt's house because when the Rath Yatra festival takes place, Lord Jagannath is shifted to the Gundicha Temple for seven days. It is also known as the Garden House of Lord Jagannath as it is located in the middle of a beautiful garden.

Gundicha Temple has some interesting legends related to it. According to one legend, Gundicha, the queen of the King Indradyumna, was a great devotee of Lord Jagannatha. Because of her deep devotion, Lord Jagannath promises her to come to her house during Ratha Yatra. Another Legend says that Gundicha Ghar is the house of Lord Krishna's adoring aunt Gundicha. It is believed that their aunt gives a welcome to the three siblings with a special delicacy made of rice called 'Padoapitha'.

If you are visiting puri for Shree Jagannath temple then you should visit this temple also. It is 2.6 kilometres from Shree Jagannath temple. Inside this temple there is also a museum . It was renovated in the year 2023 .
I visited this temple during Bahuda Yatra and it was decorated very beautifully and outside this temple the Chariot's were looking fabulous. It was very difficult at that time to go inside the temple because of the crowds. But I was able to visit this temple .
It is a must visit place in puri.

I went here for the Rath Yatra with my family, and although we reached by 4 am, we still had to wait for 2 hours for our darshan. It's quite obvious that during Rath Yatra, it's extremely crowded, and during the main darshan, we were simply floating amidst the crowd. The overall experience was beautiful. Being able to touch the soil of Puri was a fulfilling experience.

This is the birthplace of Lord Jagannath. Lord Jagannath comes here every year with his brother, Lord Balabhadra, and sister, Maa Subhadra, for nine days. This is called the Car Festival.

This place is commonly known as the "Mashi r Bari" of Lord Jagannath. During the Rath Yatra festival in the month of July, lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra are taken on the chariot and travels to their mashi r bari. The distance from Jagannath temple to Gundicha temple is 3.5 km.
This temple remains open only during the 7 days of the Rath Yatra festival. When lord Jagannath is in their 'Mashir bari', the temple is opened for devotees to enter. Apart from this time, the temple remains closed and no one is allowed to enter.
Car parking is available in from of the main gate of the Gundicha temple.
No electronic items, ornaments, mobile, belts, shoes or any kind of leather items is prohibited inside the Gundicha temple.

There are many legends linked to the temple and the annual seven-day stay of the central icons of Jagannath and his siblings during the Ratha Yatra.

A legend links the temple to Gundicha, the queen of Indradyumna (the legendary builder of the main temple) - after whom the Gundicha Temple is named. Gundicha had a peep at the divine image of Jagannath being created by the celestial architect Vishwakarma. Impressed by the image, she insisted on her husband building the temple for the deity and starting the Ratha Yatra. Another variant suggests that Jagannath was pleased with her temple and promised to visit her house, now the Gundicha Temple.
As per another legend, when Jagannath (identified with the god Krishna) goes to stay for seven days in the Gundicha Temple, he intentionally leaves behind his consort Lakshmi locked up in a store room in the main Jagannath temple. While in the Gundicha temple, he is exclusively taken care by his gopis (cow-herding girls) led by his gopi-lover Radha like Krishna in Vrindavan. The gopis are symbolized by the temple devadasis on this occasion. When Jagannatha returns to his main temple after his amorous dalliance, Lakshmi meets him at the main temple gate and sprinkles some magical powder on him, which makes him forget about his escapade in the Gundicha Temple, and she is immediately reunited with her husband in blissful love.

This is a very famous, ancient and sacred Hindu temple located few kilometres away from the main temple campus of Sri Sri Jagannath Temple at Puri in Orissa state. This Shree Gundicha Temple at Puri is also known as "Maasir Bari" in Bengali language which means "aunt's home" , where the 3 gigantic Raths or Chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balaram and Mata Suvadra Ji travel from Jagannath Temple upto this Gundicha Temple during the Rathyatra Chariot Festival every year during the summer season and the three idols are kept for one week, since it's a popular belief that Lord Jagannath visits His aunt's sacred Home once a year and stays for a week. The deities of Goddess Maa Annapurna and few other Hindu Gods are inside this temple complex. Presently visitors and pilgrims are not allowed to enter inside this temple for the past 3 - 4 years since Covid / Corona disease in 2020, and mainly because ( as told by security guards outside this temple) internal renovation works are gradually progressing inside. It's expected that this temple will reopen from this year 2024 Rathyatra Chariot Festival.

Very beautiful temple. All must visit this temple. Rain water harvesting systems should be constructed inside the complex to recharge the ground water level and control the water logging on the roads.
