On this ground hosts the Ranji Trophy cricket matches every year. In 2002, celebrated its 200th birthday by hosting a one-day cricket match between India and Sri lanka. This stadium renovated to make it fit only for sports purpose, because they want to conduct other programmes including those of political parties here.
This will not be allowed and the authorities should take necessary steps to equip the stadium for hosting all kind of sports activities.

The renovated V.R. Krishna Iyer Memorial Municipal Stadium here was opened by Sports and Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan here on December 31.

The stadium built in memory of late jurist and former Minister V.R. Krishna Iyer, who had lived here for long and represented the constituency in the Assembly, encompasses a sprawling 6.72-acre area. Works totalling ₹3.98 crore had been completed during the first phase of renovation of the stadium, and ₹13.04 crore was set apart for the works in the second phase, a press release said.

A sum of ₹2 crore for the project was allotted from the local area development fund of former MLA and Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.

Cricket was played in Thalassery much before it was introduced in Calcutta in 1860. Thalassery Stadium, also known as the Thalassery Municipal Cricket Ground, hosts the Ranji Trophy cricket matches every year. On this ground, the first ball was bowled in the early 19th century, thanks to Colonel Arthur Wellesley, who brought the game to this Malabar town. In 2002, Thalassery cricket ground celebrated its 200th birthday by hosting a one-day cricket match between India and Sri Lanka sides containing former Test players.
