In complete awe and amazement after gazing an 8th century magnificent monolithic marvel, which had been present all this while in the busiest and ever crowded streets of Pune.

Pataleshwar Caves are said to be built during the Rashtrakuta Period. The caves have been cut out from a monolithic basalt rock. The cave has a temple complex dedicated to Shiv Ji and a circular ‘Mandapa’ for Nandi Ji. Although there are 3 sanctums in the temple which are said to be of Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh each, the 2 sanctums had their statues lost during the course of their history and later were said to be reclaimed in the 19th century. Presently Shivling is in the central sanctum and the rest of the 2 sanctums are now also dedicated to Parvati Ji and Ganesh Ji.

Pataleshwar Caves entrance gate is a ‘blink & miss’ on the right side of the JM Road while on a vehicle. Since JM Road is a one way road, look at your right for Sadguru Jangali Maharaja Samadhi Mandir. Just next to the Mandir you’ll find the Pataleshwar caves entrance gate. Enter the gate and you’ll find a tall good old charm - a Bargad Tree 🌳 - welcoming you with numerous dangling roots and branches.

Pataleshwar Caves are the oldest (8th Century) man-made structures in Pune. And we have always overlooked its history, its importance and its grandness. Do visit with friends and family to understand why it has been designated as a monument of National Importance by the ASI.

Do not miss ! Entry is free for all !

An 8th century rock cut cave temple located in the heart of a bustling city. It is heartbreaking to know that ALL of the sculptures and possible inscriptions are lost at this place. Surprisingly, even now most people living in Pune don't know about the existence of this historically important place in the city. The entry mostly had a few couples and college students hanging around. But yes, there were a few tourists coming and going...
It was a really beautiful and peaceful city right there!

This is a 8th century rock-cut Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is a notable circular Nandi mandapa and a large pillared mandapa. It is a temple of three rock-cut cave sanctums, likely dedicated to Brahma-Shiva-Vishnu originally. Many visitors don't visit this place, but it has to be on your list. Entry to this monument is tricky, and you have to follow the sign board. Parking is a problem here, since it is situated near the main road. On Weekends it’s is crowded. The caves has peaceful and calm atmosphere.

The hotel's facilities are top-notch. The fitness center is well-equipped, allowing guests to maintain their workout routines. The swimming pool area is a tranquil retreat, perfect for unwinding and soaking up the sun. Additionally, the on-site restaurants offer a diverse range of culinary delights, catering to various tastes and preferences.

Awesome Mahadev Temple and Cave... The Pataleshwar caves are a monolithic excavation of a rocky hillock that gently swells and forms the terrain here. Its entrance is about a 20 feet long path from the east of the complex. It was originally an excavated tunnel but one that collapsed. It was, for a period, restored with a masonry. The path leads into an open court that is nearly a square (95 feet at its maximum in north-south, by 90 feet across east-west). Avoid weekend...

The Pataleshwar Temple is a rock-cut temple located in the city of Pune in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It is believed to have been built during the 8th century AD, during the reign of the Rashtrakuta dynasty.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Pataleshwar, who is considered to be the god of the underworld or Patala. The temple is carved out of a single piece of rock, and features a Shiva lingam along with other sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses.

The temple complex also includes a museum that houses a collection of ancient artifacts, such as sculptures, inscriptions, and coins. The museum provides insights into the rich cultural and religious history of the region.

The Pataleshwar Temple is considered to be an important historical and cultural landmark in Pune, and attracts a large number of visitors, particularly during the annual Shivratri festival. A cave within a city is something you must visit! It's a cave dedicated to lord Shiva and people came to offer prayers and puja here. Being it a tourist attractions the place is well maintained and you will enjoy the stillness yet lively atmosphere of the cave. The grand baniyan tree at the entrance is a remarkable beauty. There is no entry fee to visit this place.

This ancient legendary place is located bang on JM Road, next to Jangali Maharaj Ashram. The Cave Temple is carved out of single rock. The entry through a small rock cut channel opens up to the sight of round Mandap carved out of rock with superfine detailing of pillars. The main cave hosts the Shiva Ling and few more deities. The internal architecture is a masterpiece of carving. We can see few unfinished idols on both side of the main cave. Sure to visit for witnessing architectural marvel within the city of Pune.

It's worth a visit. It is really a weird place to be found in the middle of the city. It's a monolithic cave temple dedicated to lord Pataleshwar Mahadev. Its construction style is top down. It's excavated from top to bottom with pillars and even Nandi statue made from one single rock structure. Basically like a very crude form of Ellora Kailashnath temple.

There are no amenities here but can just sit, relax, meditate, pray to Shiva, chat with friends.
