a beautifully restored baroque synagogue, that was built in the 18th century after polish examples. to enter, ask for the keys in the below lying rabbi house. it's worth the small sum, the interior is quite unique and richly decorated.

Židia na Tokaji ma prekvapili. Zaujímavé miesto. Dom rabína aj synagóga. V dome sa dá aj ubytovať.

Tiszta nyugalmú, szép, nemes hely. A személyzet is nagyon kedves volt, a kiállítás videós előzetese pedig nagyon hangulatos volt.

Mad Synagogue is an example of beautiful Hungarian synagogue architecture. Situated on a hill overlooking the majestic vineyards of the Tokaj Hegyalja region, it is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Hungary. Built in 1795, the baroque structure sits between a Catholic Church and a Reformed Church, evidence of these sizable communities’ peaceful coexistence in this period. Mád Synagogue has a finely decorated interior with Polish-Lithuanian influences and a remarkable bimah, a platform from where the Torah is read aloud, with four columns that support the nine-sectioned vaulted space. Mád’s Jewish population began to flourish with the arrival of Polish and Ukrainian Jews in the 1720s. Rich Orthodox and Chassidic traditions were established, and members of the community produced and transported kosher wine from nearby vineyards. Religious ceremonies and services took place in the synagogue until Jewish residents of the region were deported, and murdered by German Nazis assisted by Hungarian authorities of the Horthy regime in 1944, leaving the temple abandoned.

The roof, walls, bimah, and Torah ark were conserved, but the synagogue building was in the state of complete disintegration.
In 2000, World Monuments Fund carried out surveys to analyze surviving materials and the conditions of the walls, the stucco decorations, the carved stones, and the plaster and paint of the significantly deteriorated structure. The roof, walls, bimah, and Torah ark were conserved after the completion of the study phase of the project. Research was conducted on the historical features of the temple’s façade, allowing for the accurate repair of damaged stucco decorations on the exterior. Broken doors and windows were replaced, and improved electric, heating, draining, and plumbing systems were installed. Local rabbis were consulted on the design and conservation of the interior furnishings and ritual objects. The project was completed in 2004 with a ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust in Hungary. Few Holocaust survivors from Mád returned at the end of World War II. Those who perished in the war have been memorialized by plaques with names inscribed inside the synagogue. Today this building serves as a Holocaust memorial drawing many visitors. The tour starts in the neighbouring smaller building featuring an exhibition on life and famous rabbis of Mad and offering shelter for groups of visitors and pilgrims. No kosher food is available.
Egyes adatok szerint már 1771-ben volt a faluban zsidó templom, de az a gyönyörű barokk stílusú zsinagóga, amely több mint 150 éven keresztül szolgálta a mádi zsidókat, csak 1795-ban épült fel. Építését két gazdag család, a Brener és a Teitelbaum testvérek finanszírozták, akik mint borkereskedők telepedtek le Mádon. Feljegyezték a krónikások, hogy a régi zsidótörvények szerint a nők, a gyerekek és férfiak hordták a köveket a környező hegyekből, bányákból az építkezéshez, hogy idegen kéz ne érintse azokat. A templom felszentelését a bonyhádi Boskovitz Wolf/1740–1818/ rabbi végezte el. A stílus olasz mesterek kezét dicséri, belső harmóniáját a négy tartóoszlop biztosítja. Közepén kupola borul a tóraolvasó asztal fölé. A középső négyszög körül két oszlopban padok 130 ember számára. Bensőséges intimitás jellemzi a belső teret, míg kívülről a barokk és a copf építészeti stílus harmonikus keveredése teszik egyikévé a legszebbeknek a magyarországi zsidó templomok közül.
Szép formája, gazdag s idegenszerű belseje érdekesen képviseli a hajdani magyarországi zsidóság leghagyományosabb csoportját, a Galíciával szomszédos északkeleti megyék ortodoxait. Az épület szerkezetében és elrendezésében nagy múltú hagyományok képviselője: kilencosztatú nagyterme a lengyel-litván reneszánsz 16. századi találmánya, olyan építészeti kompozíció, amely a szószék és az építészeti szerkezet között alkot kapcsolatot, azaz a tanításra és imára rendelt tér lényegét fejezi ki. (A négy oszlop, egyes vélemények szerint, a sivatagi sátorban a frigyládát rejtő belső szentély négy akác tartórúdja /Exod. 27,32/,

SAJNOS HÚSVÉT HÉTFŐN ZÁRVA TALÁLTUK ,AMIKOR OTT JÁRTUNK..

Nagyon szépen felújított zsinagóga, és a kiállítás jól összeszedett. Sokat meg lehet tudni a zsidó szokásokról, étkezés, ünnepek stb .

A mádi zsinagógát 1795-ben építették fel a Mádra költözött borkereskedő és termelő zsidó családok. A barokk stílusú zsinagóga mellett a településen híres talmudiskola is működött. Hosszú ideig békében együtt éltek a katolikus, a protestáns és az izraelita lakosok. Az 1848-49-es szabadságharc során a zsidók itt is, ahogy máshol is, Kossuth Lajost támogatták. Az első világháború hősi halottai között is megtaláljuk a nevüket a település emlékművén.

1940–44 között a zsidókat deportálták vagy munkaszolgálatra hurcolták. Közülük mindössze 40-en tértek vissza, ám 1950 és 1956 között ők is elhagyták a községet. A zsinagóga ettől kezdve folyamatosan pusztult, bár több terv is született a hasznosítására, ezek végül nem valósultak meg. Sokáig romosan, ledőlt oromfallal állt, mígnem a 2002–2004-es restaurálás visszaadta az épület eredeti pompáját.
