El Peñascal

Was lucky enough to find this fantastic restaurant. The staff made us feel very welcome and their food was delicious. From a starter and a little dessert it was the little touches. If you are visiting this city consider visiting here for authentic food.

The food in Coban is different from other regions in Guatemala. Definitely different from in the Capital

I started with a gourd of Cacao. Cocoa to us but with soft chewy chunks of cacao in it. Thinner than what we are used to, made with boiling hot water, sweet and Delicious. Made from the cacao bean, not powder.

With the cacao they serv a flavorful sauce called Teu that you put on or dip with tortillas.

We came here to have Kaq Ik, as it was recomended for this traditional dish of coban. It was delicious! Friendly staff.

Apparently when local want visitors to taste authentic Q'eqchi' dishes they take them hier. The kak'ik was delicious.

Whenever I visit Cobán, I never miss the opportunity to have dinner at the Peñascal.
With its nice and clean atmosphere it is the best place to enjoy the local cuisine.
You can try the Kaq Ik which is the most famous and delicious local dish. It is a tasty turkey stew served with chile cobanero and tamales made of white corn dough. It is accompanied by kakaw, a bitter hot cocoa beverage served in calabash husks.
Also the steak in cardamom sauce and the sub'anik (stew with four meats) are very typical and delicious dishes.
It's true that also in the capital these dishes are served, but only in Cobán you'll get the original flavour.

Absolutely delicious traditional Guatemala cuisine. Highly recommend. Superb service.
