Really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend to anyone. Jo & Wayne were really helpful and friendly, the cottage was great and we loved that we could bring our dog. The cottages are in a great location and the hot tub was a lovely addition once we'd had a busy day walking and needed to warm up! Hopefully be back again soon!

Jo is a lovely lady and great host. Really nice place to stay with nice gardens and a brook running through. Easy parking. Pub nearby, 15 min walk. Dog friendly stay. Cottage was lovely and had everything you needed plus a log burner for cosy nights if the weather's a bit cold. Will definitely return. Oh and a hot tub available for rental on site.

Fantastic place to stay. We went up for a weekend away for my birthday. We stayed in one of several of their cottages that look to have been converted from what was a Stables, giving each cottage character. They are beautifully laid out with the bedroom downstairs, 4 poster bed, en-suite, and the old stable door acts as the blind for the door. Upstairs you have the living area, with kitchen dining area and wood fire should it get chilly. The grounds of Ellen Hall where the cottages are well kept, clean, and there is ample parking. Including a large covered Barn if you want to keep your car out of the weather.
The owners were an absolute delight and couldn’t do enough to make the stay a pleasure. Recommending walks, local areas to visit and helping where possible.
One of the things id advise you to try if you stay here is the Hot Tub. It’s a wonderful place to relax, enjoy some hydrotherapy with a beautiful view of the wooded area to the back of the grounds where you can watch the many birds fly between the trees. (personally Id like to visit in Winter and see the snowy scene from the warmth of the tub)
Finally this is a dog friendly venue. There were several other couples there with dogs some of which had visited year on year for the last 7 years (which tells you everything you need to know about this place) Will definitely visit again (not just for the hot tub) as there was lots more to do than we managed in the weekend we were there.

Thanks Jo and Wayne for a wonderful stay

This was our second stay here and we we already can't wait for another trip. Jo is ever so lovely! The cottage is well equipped and with everything you need. We were initially disappointed that we couldn't use the hot tub, but all things considered, a wise decision and we were just so glad to have been able to visit the area again.
It is the perfect base for going out walking with the dogs, we went out to all sorts of places - Sale Fell, Ling fell, Buttermere, Loweswater....all just a short drive away!

Unable to put this under my own name. Computer wont let me change from my daughter. Anyway had a fantastic few days what felt like miles from anywhere but was actually easily accessible to Allanby, Mary Port & the Lake District. Lovely walks. The area itself is very quiet and I think under explored. The cottage, Salkeld was wonderful and comfortable and the steam bath was an experience...a good one. Didn't get chance to experience the hot tub. Lovely setting for a relaxing break and ideal for taking a well behaved dog. Ours loved it. Walk along the beck not quiet long enough so went exploring along the surrounding roads. Would recommend

Have been going to the cottages on and off for 15 years with my husband and dog, absolutely stunning location, so peaceful and quiet, the cottages themselves are lovely and have everything you could possibly need at hand. We stayed in Parlour Cottage and we loved, it has a log burning fire, unfortunately it was too warm to put it on, oh well we will need to book a winter stay now lol. The hot tub is amazing, I slept like a log after being in it. We had a four poster bed and it was so comfy and the bedding lovely. There are two great pubs in the village, both of which do lovely food. The location is excellent as you can explore other towns very easily. We particularly like Cockermouth and Allonby Beach. Jo and Wayne are fantastic hosts, so friendly and welcoming with a lot of knowledge of what to do in the area. We are already looking forward to booking another visit.

Me and my fiancee stayed in Salkfield Cottage for 3 nights last week, everything was absolutely perfect.. The cottage was beautiful, and exactly as described. Although the weather on two of the days was horrible the cottage was so warm and cosy with the wood burner that if anything it added to the experience!!

Hosts helpful and accommodating and great location to explore from.

Would definitely fully recommend and we will definitely be back next year!

2nd visit to Ellen Hall this year, but a different cottage this time. Again a wonderful stay in such a lovely place. Our 2 dogs and us enjoyed the winter walking and coming back to light the log burner.
Cosy, warm, secluded and quiet...just how we like it.
Many thanks Jo and Wayne for another fabulous stay. We can't wait to come up again.

Me and the wife stayed here last week end and what a great little spot it is ! We took our 2 dogs with us and stayed Friday to Monday .
We stayed in Salkeld cottage and it’s was absolutely amazing! Really quite spot but it’s got everything you need near by , the cottage itself was well nice even tho it’s not all ultra modern. Everything worked perfect and was exactly what we needed for a nice chilled relaxing weekend to get away!
The hot tub was a really nice bonus and Jo the owner was really nice and more than helpuful and made sure we had everything we needed . Would defo recommend 10/10,
Thanks a lot for having us ! Danny and lauren

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Stayed in the Salkeld cottage for 3 nights. Cottage is well laid out and equipped and has a very cosy feel to it. Didn't get to explore much of the grounds as it was January, but the hot tub is a must. It's an extra £10 to use and you get it for 45 minutes, but it's definitely worth it.
The electricity in the cottage is run by a £1 coin meter, for a measure we used £5 to cover the 3 nights we stayed. There are recommended pubs in Gilcrux to visit (visited The Masons Arms and got 10% discount for staying here).
Jo & Wayne couldn't have been any more helpful during our stay. They really know how to give these cottages character and provide a lovely getaway location. Would love to visit again if it wasn't so far away!

Setting was wonderful and peacefull. The occasional train could be heard and very little traffic. Tucked away down the lane away from the main roads a wonderful place to get some peace and quiet. 10 minutes to the coast with laybys where you can park to walk, or just sit and watch the tide.
Like going back in time.
Hosts were both lovely and helpful. We had stables 2. Compact but very well equipped for general needs.

Great clean spacious cottage. This was a perfect pre wedding romantic weekend away. We opted for one of the better cottages.which was just perfect. The four poster bed just added the finishing touches. A bottle of prosecco was waiting on ice, on arrival, at a small extra cost. Owners came and indrodroduced them self giving that personal touch. Carpark space opposite the cottages. Hot tub available at a cost of £10 for an hour. Time slot is required. And the use of a log fire in the cottage again at the cost of £10. The electricity is on a meter and seemed to run out quiet quick, so it is advised a stack of pound coins is at hand. The heaters are free and are on in the cold weather. Location is off the beaten track plenty of peace and quiet. A bubbling Brook runs at the bottom of the cottages which is lovely to hear in the morning. Only a short hi drive from both Mary Port and Cockermouth. Plenty of walks around. And nice little pubs to visit. Will be going back

Really peaceful place and very comfortable, clean cottage. Walks around the area are beautiful and the 2 pubs in the village well worth the short walk up the bridleway. Hope to be back soon :)
