The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa is the best place to visit in Alexandria. The tombs were supposed to be built by a single wealthy Roman family, considered as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages”. The tombs were built deep under the ground, has three levels of burial chambers around a spiral staircase. It has a large number of graves of human and animals. It has many figures carved on wall. A very unique experience visiting the place.

Beautiful archaeological site where you can see the underground Catacombs and smell the incredible history! The only flaw like all sites in Egypt is the poor care. To visit

A multi story underground building comprising of dozens of interlinked chambers with magnificent art work which are much easier to explore as compared to the narrow passageways of the Pyramids. Equally good and easy for all age groups.

Interesting place and definitely worth a visit. It was fascinating to see how the tombs were built, and how mummies are enclosed in the sarcophagi

Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa: The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa is a historic archaeological site located in Alexandria, Egypt, and is considered one of the seven wonders of the Middle Ages. The necropolis includes a series of tombs, statues and archaeological objects of Alexander belonging to the Pharaonic sect influenced by the Greeks and the early Roman Empire.
Inside there are still divided and numbered areas, which are the burial places of ancient clans.

A quick trip to Catacombs, and we were not disappointed. We had an amazing tour guide who gave us a lot of the pre-history in the car on our way there. Known as one of the 7 ancient wonders and discovered by a donkey, we were very excited to see how vast it was. On arrival, we got tickets at the gate and walked right in. Staff at the gate were very friendly. Once in, we started our journey down (there were a lot of steps, so we will highly recommend comfortable shoes). The tombs were still in very good condition and lots of light everywhere, which made it less scary.
Would highly recommend you take some water with you as coming back up was a good cardio session. Won't recommend the Catacombs for anyone who is claustrophobic, but for everyone else, please visit if you are in Alexandria.

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa - Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages, a place where the influences of Egyptian (Pharaonic), Greek (Hellenic) and Roman cultures are mixed. A must stop if you are visiting Alexandria. The site is from the 2nd century AD, very well preserved. An indescribable experience as you descend the circular stairs, and explore the tombs, enjoying ancient architecture and art. It is recommended to come early in the morning and avoid the crowds. One small note, from this location you can walk to Pompey's pillar, it's only about 10 minutes away.

Another must-see place in Alexandria. Perhaps it is better to have a guide to explore the history throughout the centuries, but we did our homework, so we didn't have any. Definitely not for people with a wheelchair and everyone should be extra careful as the steps are steep and narrow. Only cards are accepted, and there are toilets on the site.

Very interesting and should be on your list while visiting Alexandria. They have added wooden steps to make it easier to navigate. Make sure to come with a guide if you want to learn the history.

I absolutely loved it but it did feel a little claustrophobic at times. Everything you need to see is on the first level after that it's more of the same.

his is what my travel diary said: the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - historical archaeological necropolis consists of a series of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects of the Pharaonic funeral cult with Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman influences - one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages - used as a burial chamber from the 2nd century to the 4th century, before being rediscovered in 1900 when a donkey accidentally fell into the access shaft

Visitting this place is a remarkable experience . You are thrilled with narrow spiral staircases to the catacomb underground, a ton of nook using as catacomb of animals like donkey and deserted atmosphere from dim lighting within this remaining.

Fascinating catacombs and a fun place to explore. Some areas are more accessible than others, we avoided the areas where there was a lot of crouching involved.

The main, and most beautifully decorated tomb is easy to get to, as are several side caverns full of rock cut cubbies and an area for feasting. Take your time, it is a peaceful and pleasant place to explore.

The areasurrounding the catacombs is full of artifacts and above ground burial chambers. The huge stone fountain and several other stone monuments are worth checking out.

It’s amazing to see how these ancient burrial shafts were built. You simply can’t imagine it’s vastness until you go down. I am scared of tombs and dead issues but this place doesn’t look scary. Highly reccommend it for a visit!

It is more than just arrangements of some bones and skeletons. Multi storey structure with specific tomb for a family and then explained to a public cemetery could be seen very clearly (of course post the explanation from a guide). It helps to understand the history/story better if we have a guide.
The main place where the tomb of the family(not identified as to whom it belongs) exists , there are carvings to showcase both Greek and Egyptian influence in building the tomb.

Great historical/archeological site. We went on a tour with our ship, lasted about 30-40 minutes. Very interesting and the catacombs are fascinating and safe!

Great historical place.
I only advise people who have some breathing problems not to go down

This was one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. The location was discovered when a donkey fell through the access shaft. The architecture inside is a combination of Greco-Roman and Egyptian. Some of areas require low crawl to get to (see video). Overall a great place to visit in Alexandria.

Very interesting place. It was thrilling to see hundreds of buried tombs. The well-like shaft surrounded by steps was a unique design. Good one for history lovers.
