I never imagined that there would be a place like this. These bunkers have some stories behind it (you can read more about in the final bunker or light tower). Some bunkers are accessible but tiny. It’s a weird image of sand filled structures.

We enjoyed a nice sandwich from the Tirpitz Museum and walked down the whole beach which took about 3 hours back and forth.

The beauty and calm of this beach is really something. Getting bronzed, walk for hours, swimming in the cristal clear water, collecting shells, fishing..♡ i really really enjoyed this place

You have to have seen it to believe it. WWII Bunkers from the german occupation of Denmark, decorated as mules.
Some bunkers are still accessable but there's not much to see inside.

Great beach! Miles and miles of beautiful sand dunes. Well worth a visit. No toilets and no food trucks at the beach, or close to the beach.

lovely beach with the Bunker Mules, really great sculptures designed by Bill Woodow, makes this place very special, you never get bored to look at them and when the flood is in it looks fantastic how the waves break on the concrete

Beautiful beach to walk with sand dune you walk over to get to it. You can go inside of se of the bunkers. This beach is also a good beach to hunt for amber. The sand is so packed that people were pushing strollers and riding bikes on it as well as walking. Very cold and windy in March when we went.

Beautiful northsea Area..
Walk until your feet carry you...seen a baby seal in golden glance lying on the beach, thankfully people kept distance and it was taken by his mum later on...very impressing... and to suit these stone reminders to maules...is really cool...even that the danish armee is doing lots of activities in that area... But this is more than safe for the public as they really watch out and has nothing to do with the reminding stones...turning to maules...nice place to be if you want to walk...

Old WW2 bunker cum horse sculpture. The bunker was part of Hitlers Atlantic Wall. Nowadays it's partly hidden in the sand and sea, and attaching a horse head and tail to it (an artists project) makes them actually quite beautiful. Lovely beach, too!

You can see different types of World War II bunkers around the world, but I think there is only one place you can find bunkers that have been turned into works of equine themed art. The Danish West Coast is where numerous abandoned World War II bunkers remain on the beach and in the dunes. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Denmark, a number of bunkers were converted to “mules” by the artist Bill Woodrow in 1995. Apparently, they symbolize the evil being dragged away from the beach towards the sea.

Woodrow writes: “The sculpture consists of concrete bunkers along the beach at Blåvand-Oksby, Denmark (part of the Atlantic Wall), mounted with horses’ heads and tails cut from steel. Depending on the tide, the sculptures are either on the shore or in the sea.” Kinda like The Rising Tide sculptures in London.

About The Artist
Bill Woodrow was born in 1948 near Henley, Oxfordshire, UK and now lives and works in London and Hampshire. He has studied Winchester School of Art, St. Martin’s School of Art and 1971-72 Chelsea School of Art and has had many solo and group exhibits across the world since 1972.
