Glienicke Bridge

Amazing bridge at the end of the tram line (Tram 93, terminus) in Potsdam, it spans the water border between Potsdam and Berlin, so was an important border when Berlin was divided. The bridge was damaged in the war and restored. It was used during the cold war to occasionally swap spies and featured in the Tom Hanks film, Bridge of spies. Lots of information boards on the bridge all about it’s history. Even if you are not interested in the history, its a nice walk over the water and you can watch people paddle boarding and going past on boats.

Nicknamed the "Bridge of Spies", Glienicker Bridge was the location of a border checkpoint between East Germany and West Berlin during the Cold War. A number of exchanges of captured spies occurred on the bridge. It has also been the setting of numerous films, including the 2015 Hollywood thriller "Bridge of Spies".

Amazing place to be! The Bridge has a rich history as it divided the West Berlin and the East Germany. While walking you will still a White Line of the Wall. Must visit place, there is also a way to go below the bridge I go there to relax with a book and some snack with me. There are some Palaces near by, which can be visited too.

As we did during a tour during a pre-pandemic summer. My family and I were inspired by the history of the bridge and the role it played during the Cold War. Our tour guide provided us with a wealth of information about the spies who were exchanged on the bridge and the tensions that existed between the East and West.

In addition to its role in espionage, the Glienicker Brücke is also significant as it marks the location of the former German division. Visitors can still see the line of the "wall" and imagine the guards that stood watch over it.

Overall, I would highly recommend visiting the Glienicker Brücke if you're interested in Cold War history or simply want to see a beautiful bridge. It's a must-see attraction in Potsdam that is steeped in history and provides a fascinating glimpse into the tensions and conflicts of the past.

Glienicker Brücke stands as a sober reminder of Cold war tensions. Be sure to enjoy coffee and treats at the Cafe Pedales in the Villa Schöningen right by the bridge. At the cafe you can see the GDR symbol

A place of much historical significance and worth a walk across. Read about the many prisoner exchanges that occurred across this historic bridge.

A nice, clean and peaceful green area. The bridge is well kept and designed. You can either go to relax or exercise. If you like long walks that's the place!

Beautiful lake and views. And it felt important given recent history to savour freedom of movement at a place where it wasn’t once possible.

The bridge is spies... It's a lot smaller, but equally as interesting when you cross it yourself.

It's fun to imagine walking from the East side where all the nice decorative pieces and the wall crossed, to your freedom in the West.

The bridge is great and the history is very interesting. You can get there conveniently by bus/tram and enjoy the view.

A nice connecting bridge worth to go to take a look. It’s connecting East Berlin and West Berlin. The colour of the bridge is slightly changed from the middle.
