The atmosphere there is really unique, as all the exhibitions take place in a former factory but with a modern inside design. It is free for students and one can spend 2-3 hours easily, learning a lot about the region history AND nature !

Highly recommend it, especially as the city itself is not that great.

If you only plan to go to one museum in Germany, THIS IS THE ONE. Very inspiring narrative. From pre-history, to history, to industrialisation, to change in people’s life and deterioration of environment, to transformation and recovery, the museum tells the entire story of the famous region - its birth, its development, its glory, its sorrow, its rebirth.

A wonderful experience and a huge museum. It took us around 4 hours and maybe would’ve stayed more if we went slower. Don’t forget to visit the panoramic observation deck located at the top by the end of your visit!

Very good museum. Industrial timeline and history of the Ruhr, going back 300 million years ago. Only went through the main museum building which took about 6 hours (went very slowly reading most of the descriptions of what was displayed).
There is a Café inside and a restaurant in another building in the area.
From Essen HBF, take the 107 Tram for 3,10€ per adult. Stop at Kapitelweise then walk to the museum.
