The Folkwang museum has an exciting architecture, continuously combining interior and exterior, deliberately presenting the exhibition halls as a maze, interjecting reading and rest areas, enticing one to just wander around and discover. Great collection of German Expressionists. I came to Essen especially to see this museum and stayed for 2 days, it is that good! And the direction decided to keep entrance free, as a gift to art lovers.

Major art collection in a beautiful modern building by David Chipperfield, also showing changing exhibition. The current print exhibition was excellent. The collection galleries are very spacious (almost empty...) with an interesting, maybe slightly overworked mixed hanging.
There is a well stocked museum shop and excellent museum restaurant. Highly recommended

Spectacular museum. Their collection is beautiful, modern, and unique. The staff here are very friendly and professional. Given that this is a free museum, we were very impressed with how well managed, organized, and clean the entire place was. We came early in the morning and there were only 2 or 3 other guests in each gallery, which made our experience that much better. Highly recommend this place if you're visiting Essen.

I was so pleased to have visited this.
Excellent and well worth the visit if your in this area. You would be sad if you missed it.
This museum has a GREAT permanent collection from the impressionists onwards - The collection is stunning, all the big names. it's set out in light galeries; beautifully laid out.

What a wonderful surprise!
The building itself is remarkable.
Permanent collection of the highest quality.
It's a must if you're in Essen, but it's worth a trip even if you're far away.

A large permanent exhibition with a current exhibition celebrating 100 years to the collection. The museum has many pleasant spaces, there's a lot to see but also places to take a pause or rest. Many highlights, in and out the special exhibition for which you stand in line and pay 14€
The permanent exhibition is for free! Because one of us is impressionism fan, we took the line and paid for RENOIR, MONET, GAUGUIN - but also without that, I'd enjoy the visit.

The regular exhibition is free and is alone worth visiting. The building itself is modern and has many sitting areas to chill or take a break. Most staff are friendly but some are a bit stern. I personally don’t care about how and when the buyers aquired which paintings. But that was the focus of the text in the current main exhibition of Renoir, Monet, Gauguin.

Emblematic collection in a gorgeous building. The folkwang collection tells the story of early 20th century art and it's problematic treatment during WW2. Plus holds contemporary exhibition of great renown.
It's a busy place, schools, busses with visitors,... But they tend to stick to the big exhibits and not the rest of the collection.
Also worth mentioning: well stocked and original museum shop!

It was a very worthwhile exhibition of major impressionists, Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, and numerous other period artists. Good downloadable audio tour available for free. The exhibition is based on the private collections of two late 19th century industrialists and art collectors, one German, one Japanese. Pre-booking tickets are required.

The museum has pictures of different ancient lithographs from Paris and some from certain parts of Africa. I enjoyed my visit, but note that this museum DOESN'T open on MONDAYS. And also it doesn't cost much to visit. You can buy your ticket on the day of the visit.

Was there at the exhibition of French art (Chagall, Matisse, Miro). Thought provoking collection with descriptions both in German and English. Staff is very nice, polite and friendly.

I visited the museum on a Sunday and there were few people.
The conditions were perfect, so the experience was great. It's easy to forget about the passing hours, once inside.

Impressive collection of modern art. You can find pretty much every famous artist here: Matisse, Cézannes, Van Gogh, Kirschner and many others. Even more amazing the entrance is free. Only for special exhibit there is a fee. The museum cafe is excellent as well. Parking garage is just underground, easy and not expensive.

Amazing museum with a choice of different exhibitions; a really big and impressive pernament one is for free, the other ones are also really interesting and very cheap. A must see in Essen if you're interested in art.

Really worth a visit if you are in Rhineland. Excellent pieces of modern and contemporary art in a nice setting. (though I found the order of hanging quite strange)

One of Germany’s most impressive art museums that nobody seems to know about. The Impressionist collection will leave you dazzled. Make the trip to come here or you will be missing out on so many beautiful works of art.
