It's with mixed feelings that I leave a poor review for this place - our first stay at Casa del Tesoro in late 2016 was quite pleasant. We stayed in a single bed room and the service was excellent, food was delicious and overall a good experience.

Our more recent stay in April 2018 was terrible literally from the moment we stepped inside. We made reservations with the hostess ahead of time - she knew us from our previous visit. When we arrived in the morning, the common areas of the house were disorderly and there were piles of laundry sitting about. She seemed surprised at our arrival.

We go up to the room with two beds, and more trouble. Our entire week-long stay, we could not rid the bathroom of a funky smell, even with the window continuously open. Furthermore, the shower did not drain properly, so any time one showered, there would be a small lake of standing used water. Can't even really call it a shower since it was just a tub with a hand extension and NO SHOWER CURTAIN. Imagine the deluge we endured at every shower time.

Moreover, the beds were very hard. I did not sleep well my entire stay.

Additionally, the air conditioning unit caused an allergic reaction in my travel partner for the first two days- possibly from lack of use for an extended amount of time.

We dined at the house at least four evenings. The food was ok, but not the same quality we were expecting from our previous experience. The last meal we ate there, I was served what was little more than seasoned and fried chicken spine. I decided we would not eat there again for the remainder of our stay (We ate several times at the restaurant across the street called Doña Martha, which we thoroughly enjoyed and I recommend).

There's more - they do not clean the rooms unless specifically instructed to do so! The host's children can be clearly heard playing and yelling late into the night. The coffee was a hit or miss. Sometimes it was good, sometimes it was bitter and watered down. I overheard the other guests complaining more than once about all these issues (coffee, noise, lack of housekeeping) also.

Although the prices in Cuba seem very attractive by American or European standards, I have confidence there are better accommodations than these to be found in Santiago de Cuba, and for a better price to boot.

In conclusion, even though the house itself is attractive and the services are many, nothing is attended to with care. It's quite apparent the guests are not the host's priority. I paid for eleven nights (divided partially by 2 rooms) - not a small amount of money, especially by Cuban standards. The only reason I endured all of the aforementioned complaints (not even all of which I listed, only the biggest ones!) was because I was traveling with older folks for whom stability is important and because I was mostly out seeing to more important personal affairs and could not devote any time to relocating. Even though I was looking forward to be returning as a loyal customer, sadly for both the hostess and myself, I will not be returning, and will look for better accommodations during my next visit.
