The park is beautiful, and so quiet. We saw 3 other people on our hike to the caldera, as well as a ton of wildlife and beautiful plants. It's off the beaten path but definitely worth a stop!

Cute national park if you find it! Now they have one ranger so you need to pay 15$ to hike the two trails they have. One is for bird watching, the other go in the direction of a little lac and continue to las minas. It's an easy 2km to go to the lac and from there you can continue for 7km more 250m before reaching the lac to las minas. You'll need a machete and a guide if you want to do the latter cause the trail has not been maintained. Now regarding the lac, I would discourage you swim there since you have to cross a smelly swamp. I did it but wouldn't do it again... Apparently the park has only 1000 visitors a year and I suspect it's partly because it's not easy to find. Tip to find the entrance: search for Hostel Water National Park Juan Castro Blanco on Google map.

For birders it is a good place for looking for highlands species. It is not that far from San Jose area and the access is in good shape.

No crowds no congestion no problems. This is what a park is supposed to be to refresh and rejuvenate.
