The scenery is very picturesque. Be aware of the time when you visit. Anytime after 11am will be very hot. The loop in the red desert takes 1-1:30 hours and the loop in the grey desert takes around 1-1:30 hours as well, including a visit to Xilopagos. Both hikes don't require a tour guide.

A marvelous natural place that makes you feel in a desert without being in one. There quite good local guides that will tell you about the history of this place, you can also get nice views and close by you'll find a small town with amazing hotels and food. The entrance is free and the guide is 120.000cop. Take water with you as the water in the touristic area is quite expensive.

Wow this place is so great. We found the best guide at the same place and a great 3 start cozy accommodation . This desert is so amazing and I’m so glad I made the effort to go / I not only visit the red zone but all the valley of the XILOPALOS ,

Beautiful! Red & grey deserts. Take enough water, it’ll be dry you can do the tour by your own but anyway be respectful and follow recommendations. One of the cutest places on this country

I recommend going with a guide to get the best out of it. It's takes about 2hrs to hile around, depending on your walking speed of course.

This is one of the best landscapes I have ever seen in Colombia. Getting there is quite difficult, the road is rough but is worth it. I spent a whole weekend around this desert and is mind blowing. The landscapes, the multiple natural activities, and the local cuisine. Definitely a place to recommend.

Really mind blowing experience. This desert is totally different to all the other deserts I've seen so far. It is totally worth a visit! Get a guide for a half day tour (~35000 pesos) and gaze at the stars at night in the observatory (10000 pesos).

Beautiful desert with a telescope to view the stars near by and a desert pool only a few Ks if you need to cool off!
Be careful if you take a guided horse back ride as many of the horses here are under fed with saddle sores from inadequate equipment and over riding. I had to refuse the first ride we booked because even though we asked if the horses were well fed and happy, the horses that they brought had protruding hips and back bones with sores! We went 2ks down the road and found fit horses. Dont be afraid to speak up, you know if you wouldnt want to be ridden like that- dont make the horse. Accommodations near by are pretty run down but we rested well after a long days ride.

The desert it’s a contrast of colors, red, gray and a little of green, you can find three beautiful pools in middle of nothing you pay 5k COP for it and for sleep there are many hostels very cheap around 10k COP per night, the observatory in the night is amazing. It’s an awesome place from Colombia.
