The Dining Car at High River Station

What a cool experience! We got to eat in an old school train car! Service was good and the food was really good too!

I've been wanting to come here for quite some time and am really glad that I finally was able to. They have done a tremendous job of using this historical significant diningcar (1 of 10 in North America) to recreate a dining experience. You know it's going to be a great place when the head chef helps bring food and buys tables. The food is exceptional, and so is the service, but I'd suggest making a reservation... this gem is popular and books up fast. Everything looks delicious, but this might be the best salmon eggs benedict I've ever had.

What a neat experience, and amazing breakfast... wow!

I had no reso, however they were kind enough to seat me (I was alone). I had the traditional breakfast (bacon, eggs, and toast) it was delicious. I'm personally not big on eggs Benny but the table beside me had a couple, and they looked delicious. I've never been enticed to order eggs Benny before this day. I stuck with what I am comfortable with but it was great. The cart is a vibe, food is great and prices are reasonable!

On our way home from Nanton my mother and I just decided on a whim to try The Dining Car. We had and EXCEPTIONALLY good time! The food was Fantastic! Best meal we have had out in years, no joke! Everything was home made and you knew it. So comforting. The atmosphere is light and warm, soft music playing, not nearly as cramped as I thought it might feel. Our waiter(whom I'm so sorry I didn't remember his name) was wonderful. VERY clean and well maintained. You can tell they take pride in everything the do there. We 100% wl be back more often!

If you haven't been here I highly recommend and make sure during peak season and hours(11 to 1pm) to call and make reservations!

Unfortunately there is one thing that would make it hard for some, it's not wheel chair accessible. There is stairs leading up to the door and a very narrow hallway and small bathroom at then end.

It is so cool to have a meal in a static train! Haha.. breakfast is amazing and you can benefit from the sweet dishes or the salted ones, very nice!!! Best waffles ever! Try it and also the Stuffed French toast or the Brie and Bacon omelette.. my favorites!

Went here for the first time in over ten years with my boyfriend. Food was incredible and still had nostalgia from when I went as a child. Service was wonderful and overall experience was great, I just think the whistle stop is sensational and a must-stop if in the area. Be prepared though, I believe the car has ten tables, so you might be S-O-L if you try to go at a busy time/weekends, would recommend calling/planning ahead.

Amazing food and service. The dining car is very clean and very unique. They plant gardens in the back each year for produce for the restaurant. I had the build your own eggs Benny with Avocado and pulled pork. My hubby had the Pulled pork Hash (which was insane!). My daughter had fruit and French toast and said it was her new favourite restaurant. Well worth the drive from the city.

2 nd time.....
Tiffany (wifey) was off today (nurse) and we decided to gallop down #2 to the Candy store in Nanton BUT we wanted to have breakfast at The Dining Car on our way.

We arrived around 11:15am and as we were seated the chef even greeted us and called me the chili man cos the last time we ate there I raved about their chili. I had intentions to buy and take home some chili.

So, I ordered to go, 3 bowls of chili and also we ordered their continental breakfast. Every bite was “exactly” what we had ordered. Tiffany could not finish her meal and they kindly packed it to go.

Also, to point out the service provided was nothing short of “exceptional”, The servers name is Page. Tiffany and I have eaten at several eateries since we moved from Vancouver to Calgary and must share with you Page is one the best if not the best server we had the pleasure being served by.

She invented the words “attentive, personable & customer service "101”, Page, thank you for being an outstanding server!

Will we return, zip-a-dee-doo-dah, I reckon so…

First time....

Tiffany and I (fairly new Alberta residents-Calgary) took a leisurely drive down #2 South, popped in to our favorite Candy store in Nanton and bought a few goodies. After leaving Nanton, we had not visited High River and thought it could be a good place to try and grab a bite before we head back home.

We had an appetite for fish and chips and drove around the down town area and spotted this old rail car. We thought it was part of the museum next door. We had the time to visit and quickly surmised it was an eatery. The owner greeted us at the door and we peeked inside it looked like a kool eatery and thought well let’s try it.

We had the good fortune while approaching The Dining Car, we chatted outside with two older women that were so sweet and we both enjoyed our brief conversation with them. They later came in for a bite also.

We did not have reservations as we were asked but the owner was gracious to permit Tiffany and I a table. We waited for only a few minutes and sat on an old railcar couch that was extremely comfy.

We were seated shortly after.

Tiffany and I ordered our food as the server was very responsive. I ordered the chili. It was sooooooo delicious and thick you “almost” needed a knife-just kidding…no spoon needed just a fork. This chili was the best restaurant chili I have ever eaten. My only regret that I did not order more to take with me.

The coffee was freshly brewed and Tiffany’s chicken fingers were very tasty as per her reflection.

On our next trip we will dine there again for sure BUT I will make certain to buy two additional Chili bowls to go!!!

This is the place I recently loved to and surely will go again next time whenever driving thru the High River. Today my family (3 boys) haven't made any reservations but the manager arranged two tables for five of us. The dishes were delicious, the environment gave me dream inside a legacy train, and the price was economical. One more important point to note. The server was an lovely young lady who I never forgot. Her adorable working attitude even got my wife appreciated.

Super delicious food, bread made in the house. The decor is not only beautiful but all food was perfect and yummy. We'll definitely be back.

Amazing atmosphere and great experience. This is our family's favorite restaurant to go for any special occasion Been a hometown staple for breakfast and brunch. Delicious food.

The food omg!!!!! Simply the best: genuine, real home cooked menu and very reasonable prices, coupled with a super friendly service makes for a must-visit.

Today, on Mother's Day, I visited a restaurant with my family. The week before, I had visited the same restaurant with my friends on my bike, and I enjoyed it very much. However, my wife was jealous. Therefore, I decided to take my family there and confirm that the food was indeed excellent.

I was delighted to find that the food was, in fact, amazing. The restaurant had a great ambiance, and the service was fantastic. We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided to come back to try out other items on the menu.

In summary, my family and I had a great time at the restaurant, and we look forward to returning in the future to sample more of their delicious offerings.

A cute and delicious dining experience in High River. I have never had a bad meal here and the atmosphere has a nostalgic feel (in an old train car). It’s also close to all the cute shops in High river so you can plan a lunch on the weekend and then go shopping.

Update! I went to their newly renovated dining car and it is super cute! It was definitely busy and glad we made a reservation. The food was great and there are vegetarian/vegan options.

OMG, even though we have occasionally stopped in before, the new local owners have overhauled everything and it is truly very impressive. We can't wait to go back! Dave is chef and puts out amazing quality for the price. I can't remember the last time I had a clubhouse sandwich made with real ham sliced off a roast, real roast chicken and huge slices of bacon. One just doesn't see that anymore but they are providing terrific quality. The custom burger was huge and tasty....the messy-er it was, the better it tasted.
The Whistle Stop is our new favorite place in all of High River. We'll be back very soon and hope you do too. You won't be disappointed. Oh, forgot to mention yesterday's soup...Dill Pickle! It was soooo delicious; the perfect amount of dill with potatoes and veggies.

AB roadtrip, stop by Train restaurant and have a large breakfast.and shop local. Lively staff and service is warm and welcoming .

One of the best egg bennies I’ve ever had! Staff were so nice too. Super unique experience in the train car.

A great experience, excellent food and service and reasonably priced. I will be returning!

Really nice spot for an affordable meal with great service and atmosphere! Love the train car! Lots of parking as well!
