Amazing little historical place with very little or no records of it's past glory! Maybe around 400 years old! First I visited this place with my father as a child! It was a very nostalgic feeling for me felt like I was touching the untold past! Hope it stands the torture of time!

This is a place having its own historical value. Descriptively, Sonakanda Fort is a river fort situated in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, on the eastern bank of Shitalakshya River.[1] Though the time of its establishment could not be ascertained, historians believe that the river fort was built by Mir Jumla II, a Subahdar of Bengal under the Mughal Empire, to defend Dhaka and Narayanganj from pirates. This place has nothing to see except the fort and it is considered as a playground by local people. And you might see some buggers eating ganja and smoking weed (it's cheap here), so good luck with that

Mir Jumla II was appointed as the Subahdar or governor of the then Bengal province in 1660 AD. He was aware of the pirates who ran a campaign of terror in the important cities of Bengal. In a quest to protect the capital Dhaka from the pirates, Mir Jumla II decided to build three river forts around Dhaka, including Sonakanda Fort.

This is a great tourist spot for someone visiting Narayanganj. There are two forts / killa in Narayanganj. One is this one and the other is on the other side of the river. Subedar Isa Kha built this fort during his reign. It was to control the river way. It is totally free. No tickets required. Mostly not crowded. Good place to exercise photography skills.

Sonakanda Fort 09/09/2022.

We left by bike at 7:00 am to visit the sights of Narayanganj from Mirpur 2 of Dhaka. We reached Hajiganj fort at approximately 8:15 am. After visiting Hajiganj fort, we left for Sonakanda fort. Crossing Hajiganj Nabiganj ferry, we reached Sonakanda fort. We reached here without any difficulty by showing the route on Google map.It is open to public. We went around Sonakanda Fort by bike and left the bike in front of the main gate and entered inside.Looks very similar to Hajiganj fort. Inside the fort is a field which is used as a playground by the locals. We look inside and take pictures. As we leave the fort we see local boys entering the field with footballs.

Sonakanda Durg is a historical place. Which is located on the east bank of Shitalakshya river in Bandar upazila of Narayanganj district. It is believed that the fort was built by the then Subadar Mir Jumla around 1650. It is an archeological artifact. I think it is necessary to visit this archeological site if you want to know about the ancient tradition of Barobhuiyads of Bengal.

Sonakanda Fort is a river fort situated in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, on the eastern bank of Shitalakshya River.[1] Though the time of its establishment could not be ascertained, historians believe that the river fort was built by Mir Jumla II, a Subahdar of Bengal under the Mughal Empire, to defend Dhaka and Narayanganj from pirates.[2]
Bengal went under the effective control of the Mughal Empire in 1574 AD after the defeat of Daud Khan Karrani by the Mughal General Munim Khan. Mughals exercised a progressive rule in Bengal and were determined to protect their subjects from external forces.

Mir Jumla II was appointed as the Subahdar or governor of the then Bengal province in 1660 AD. He was aware of the pirates who ran a campaign of terror in the important cities of Bengal. In a quest to protect the capital Dhaka from the pirates, Mir Jumla II decided to build three river forts around Dhaka, including Sonakanda Fort.[2]

Though archaeologists cannot trace any evidence on its date of establishment, according to historians the construction of the fort started between 1660 and 1663 AD.[3]

Needs special renovation to keep this ancient witness attractive. Peoples doesn't visit that much. But could be very nice if some improvement is done and make a way to earn from here to maintain the place like lalbagh fort. By the way this fort had a secret tunnel to Sonargaon or Lalbagh fort (not sure).

Sonakanda Fort is an old fort on the east bank of the Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj. It was built by Mir Jumla II, a governor of Bengal under the Mughal Empire, in the mid-17th century to protect Dhaka and Narayanganj from pirate attacks. At that time, Narayanganj was the capital of the eastern part of Bengal.
The fort has a unique design, with a metal sculpture of a camera lens on the west side, which was used for a large cannon that could shoot at the enemies on the river. The sculpture has a staircase that leads to a gateway with a beautiful arch. The sculpture also has two circles of bricks around it, which make it more attractive.
The fort does not have any inscription that tells when it was built, but historians think that it was built between 1660 and 1663 AD, during the reign of Mir Jumla II. The fort is taken care of by the Department of Archaeology and Museums of Bangladesh and they have repaired it a few times.
