To describe Butlers Guesthouse as quaint or charming would be a great disservice, and bit of an understatement. The guesthouse was the old Birregurra hospital, which in itself is fascinating given the tiny population of Birregurra. Some aspects of the old hospital have been retained. As you wander the corridors, it’s hard to imagine that this place once had its own operating theatre, but there are small tell-tale signs that this was once a hospital. From the ramps and doors to some of the bathrooms, there are little glimpses of the building’s heritage.
The current décor is a time capsule of early twentieth century Australiana. I particularly liked the bar and dining area, perfect for an old time host your own murder! There’s even a small cinema and a games room.
Birregurra is in a great central location. I was able to visit the gorgeous coastal town of Lorne to the south, and the beautiful yet slightly enigmatic Lake Elizabeth to the south-west. The entire Victorian Surf Coast and the luscious Otway is all within easy driving distance. As the town is located between Winchelsea and Colac, grabbing any trip essentials or finding a place to eat is a breeze.
Caveats guests should be aware of are sound travels through the room walls, and some of the doors are the original hospital doors and due to age tend to stick.
Overall, I had a marvellous stay and not only would I recommend Butlers Guesthouse, I would happily stay there again.

I had a lovely experience staying here, it felt like Jen had welcomed us into her home.

The place has the charm of a 100 year old building, but has been well maintained & updated for the 21st century.

The complimentary breakfast was also lovely.

Really enjoyed my stay here, welcomed by Jenny, she took my friend and I straight to our room, she had the heating on for us as it was quite cold out. The property was really interesting, it is a converted hospital so there is a cinema room, multiple sitting areas, a little library, games room and so on. The wood burning stove was lit and it was a lovely place to sit and read. The room was nicely decorated, clean and handy ensuite. Towels and soap provided. The breakfast was really nice too, I had scrambled eggs and toast, tea and then a yoghurt with some granola and dried fruit with orange juice. There was also cereal and other bread to toast. I didn't get to use the spa but I'm sure it would have been a nice experience, I'd highly recommend this place, it's inland about an hour or so from the great ocean road.
Room was a good size, cosy, bed comfortable, it was clean, towels provided and soap.

Beautifully maintained period guesthouse with nice little touches here and there. Has a nice cinema setup and a games rooms. Plenty of space to have your own spot away from other guests. The couple who run it are lovely and will go out of their way to help. We even got a lift to and from Brae for lunch! Would stay here again for sure.

Very friendly hosts, running a guesthouse in an old hospital. The antiques displayed add to the charm. Very clean. Thanks for the stay.

If you would like to stay in a 100 year old converted hospital, with a nostalgic theatre room (the movie kind), inviting sitting areas, bar, jukebox, recliners in front of a warm fireplace, dining area, a games room, all surrounded by a loving collection of vintage pieces, then this is your place....hosts are lovely, local people happy for a chat who highly recommend places to visit in the area, we loved the vibe & will definitely be coming back.

I had the pleasure of staying here last weekend and had the best nights sleep I have ever had. As soon as you walk into the 100+ year old hallway you can feel the stresses of the modern world dissappear. I look forward to coming back.

Hidden gem - the owner/host/ couple Jenny and Ross are a warm welcoming pair that deserve the credit for all the work they have put in all these years.

Well worth the stay, as a getaway or a retreat or if you're visiting the Great Ocean Road sights.

Their house as others reviewed is "intriguing" and filled with interesting antiquities as well as modern stuff.

A must to suggest if you're @ Birregurra and don't want to be too immersed in the beach life! :)

10-15 to a local wool farm Tarndie ; 20-30 minutes to Lake Elizabeth or the Ottway tree-tops among other fun activities!

What a comforting place in the very fashionable Sorrento. I have to say that looking to B n B's is a welcome change from hotels. Well kept Butlers Guesthouse is in an ideal position for those who what to travel to nearbye destinations including Portsea and two amazing golf clubs. Yes i am a golf widow. Please note don't think that the staples in the guesthouse are intended for use. They are well past there due date.
Stock up if you have a chance before going to Sorrento as food is expensive.
