Fantastic day today (23/09/2023) on the Pichi Richi Railway! Very knowledgeable volunteers to point out areas of significance along the journey. Definitely recommend. The photos don’t do it justice. Lots of people following the train along it’s journey in their cars to wave and take photos. Plenty of room to sit down without being squashed in the cabins. Recommend booking a table at the cafe in Quorn because it gets very busy when the train pulls up. Buy tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment for the railway as it is popular.

What a magnificent way to spend a day!! Amazing scenery, comfy chairs and the ability to open the windows and stick your head out. The volunteer staff were friendly, knowledgeable and professional. I can't recommend it enough. Take a jumper for the trip back as it can get cool.

A little bit of steam engine rail heritage and some very passionate volunteers make this a unique experience.

A must do if in Port Augusta or Quorn. Celebrating its centenary (1923) this short 2 hour each way train trip is a journey into a bygone era.

If you ever get the chance do it. We did a one way trip, my wife travelled on the train and I drove the motor home to Quorn taking pictures of the train. It was a buzz plus all the history. Follow us Sweet-Az RV'n on youtube

Lovely heritage railway. Scenery along the way is stunning, especially at dusk. Check the timetable and book before leaving, especially off peak times when services can be rather scant. If you miss the train chase it with your car for some great trackside photos.

I was like a kid in a candy shop with this experience. Such a beautiful and well kept train. Being able to take my children on this was fantastic like my dad had done for me. What made it even better was when they brought my son up into the cab to see what it looked like and then explained everything. He's still talking about it. I hope we can keep this going for future generations. The volunteers on board provided a great commentary and were absolutely lovely. Try the scones as they were so good.

What a great day, it was a bit wet, but still great. So happy we got to ride it. Book ahead..!
Goes from Quorn about 16klms then returns after 30min.
If you can't get on, Drive it and take photos at each crossing, the train only goes about 30klms per hour... so easy to get ahead.!

Highly recommended experience to take this wonderful historic steam train up through the southern Flinders Ranges from Port Augusta. We did the "Afghan Express" which is the full day experience, amounting to the very relaxing and scenic train journey 2 hours in each direction as well as a 2-hour stopover in Quorn where you can indulge some very unique Quandong delicacies at the Quandong Cafe in town, visit one of several historic pubs in the town or else find a shady spot somewhere for a picnic lunch. Check the Pichi Richi timetable for shorter or cheaper options based on availability. The southern Flinders are ancient and stunning and the Pichi Richi is brilliant way to experience them. A beautiful day out!

Wonderful experience, so glad I did it. However travelling on it in winter is freezing! Make sure you rug up really well, even bring a blanket. There is no heating on the train and the windows are allowed to be open for people to take photos etc.

This is a great steam train ride on the Afgan Express to Quorn from Port Augusta & return. The volunteers do an excellent job. Even had a local band to entertain us while we checked in & await the train. We need to keep this fabulous piece of history running. Definitely book ahead so you don't miss out.

Actually I just stumbled on the steam engine turning around at Woolshed flat. It's not something you see, as the engine reversed into a triangle section of the railway and then shunted to the carriage section waiting patiently to be hitched up. It all happened very efficiently with expertly practiced skill.

A wonderfully restored and preserved train and scenic journey. Fantastic work by the many volunteers to keep it going all these years.

What an excellent bonus to our trip to have been able to ride the Pichi Richi from Quorn to Woolshed Flat. I was sure that all the tickets had sold out due to being Father’s Day. It was so exciting as the steam train left the station. Beautiful scenic views all the way. The staff member on our carriage was very informative about the history of the train and Australian history in general. Duration was 3 hours, about an hour to Woolshed Flat & then we stopped there for an hour for coffee and scones. The staff at Woolshed flat warmly greeted us. It would have been good if we’d known beforehand that they only accept cash as there are no atms there. Covid restrictions were adhered to. We were able to get many good pics. Highly recommend a steam train ride on the Pichi Richi!

I am a train buff, especially the old stream locomotives, WOW, we spotted the service from Port Augusta to Quorn, gathered some great pictures. Our goal is to ride the steam train in the near future. I am amazed on what the volunteers have done to restore the locomotives and carriages
