Food was top notch and service was really quick. We were worried that we may not get a seat but there’s much seating both inside and out that it’s not an issue.
Breakfast roll was nice and roasted mushrooms delicious but the standout was the crumpets with quince jam

I’ve popped into this cafe a few times when I’m in the area. They are fast and friendly with pumping out coffees. They also have an excellent selection of baked goods. You can sit in their shipping container or outside in their generous sized courtyard. I recommend sitting outside if you have little ones and they can enjoy the space by the garden beds watching the cars go past. This is also a dog friendly cafe.

Great unique cafe with shipping containers turned into a beautiful space with an outdoor area to match with a sustainable garden and even a bee hive. Great coffee and tasty as hell breakfast, will be coming back for more this summer and beyond!

Friendly warm service from the start! Was a cold blustery (wintry) morning but they took the care to let us know it’d be a 15 min wait, but we could take a seat outside and have a coffee first.

Cold filter coffee is absolutely incredible and the BLT could be one of the best in Melbourne.

There’s a reason this place is a Footscray institution.

☆ Staff were welcoming and lovely – allowed us to sit at any table, indoors or outdoors.

☆ Space indoors was beautiful – lots of natural light, open windows, blushing plants.

☆ Coffee and food came out promptly. The 'King Brown Mushrooms on Toast' was delicious and filling.

☆ Would highly recommend and I can't wait to return next time!

Rudimentary has a great story and vision, a family transforming their unused land from a carpark to a cafe and welcoming community space - on a budget. It was constructed from 4 shipping containers with the idea to move whenever needed.

The main focus was sustainability, having compost facilities, rainwater tanks and their own fresh gardens, planting the fruit and vegetables that then go into the menu.

Being a local I am kicking myself for not visiting sooner. I was stunned to see it completely packed inside and out on a Monday morning. The Chai Latte was perfect, I really admired the crockery they use. Porridge is not usually my go to but I was feeling it and glad I ordered it, it had a lot of fruity sweetness and wasn’t at boring. The sandwich was also really tasty and humble with side of potato chips.

We are regulars for weekend brunch and it's always been spot on, but the reason why I'm writing a review today is because we went for a quick lunch on a Thursday and OMG the duck and the gnocchis were simply DIVINE! Excellent service, fair price and excellent food!

Rudimentary is such a great example of how to combine architecture, interior design, sustainability and the Aussie café culture.

On my way from Melbourne to Geelong, I stopped at Rudimentary for a coffee. Their team has created a beautiful space - simple, yet amazingly stylish.

They started with an idea to transform an unused lot of land into something of significance for the area. The building is constructed from three 40ft shipping containers and one 20ft and was designed to be relocated if the need arises.

Sustainability was a key focus on the build and business from the very beginning. The use of sustainable materials, rainwater capture, passive cooling and heating, double-glazing, insulation, building relocation, are some of the features.

The spacious garden forms a critical role in tying the whole business together and creates a place of relaxation and wonder. The brief was to create a place that would form as a reprieve from the chaos of the surrounding area as well as create a space that would challenge your mind and provide sustenance for the restaurant.

In a nutshell, this was the perfect space to enjoy a coffee in a relaxed environment before hitting the highway. I first went for an elegant batch brew from Colombia roasted by Small Batch: Anibal Sanchez, Pink Bourbon from La Argentina, Huila in Colombia. In the cup I enjoyed a high sweetness of golden raisin with a refreshing acidity, flavors of dried fruits and cantaloupe. The body was bold, the mouthfeel syrupy, and I especially loved the long-lasting sweet and clean finish.

Before leaving, I went for a second coffee, a typical Australian flat white: it was just super sweet, smooth, and deliciously creamy. Again and again, I am thrilled about the Australian dairy quality. I believe the dairy quality is part of the success story of espresso-based milk beverages in Australia.

A very fun and vibey cafe. I adored sitting out in the vegetable garden. The staff were super friendly and the coffee was good too. The kimchi toastie was a great way to start the day, would recommend.

The menu was limited and quite trendy, but had enough on it for me to be able to find something appealing.

Best coffee in Footscray. If you're visiting or local or wanting somewhere fresh to experience, highly recommend Rudimentary. With a menu that covers off on the basics but also explores beyond the boundaries, they offer great coffee, actual loose leaf tea that they brew for you, and I hear the dirty chai is delicious. Come for the coffee, but stay for the space. Two repurchased shipping containers, the space is bright and airy and set against mature veggie patches. The outside-in feeling brings you close to nature, close to growing food, and it closes the loop - metaphorically at least - from patch to plate. Big enough to cope with family groups, prams, dogs and toddlers, Rudimentary is a must to try.

Great brunch spot! If you've got room, get a potato hash! They are huge but cooked to perfection!
