Back here for the first time since my uni days decades ago, when I was a regular customer, and I'm glad to say it was as good as I remember it. Shame about the upstairs not being available, but the food's the thing, and that was great. Particularly glad to see the gau (or gow) gees, as I have not been able to find them anywhere else -- or at least not by that name. Will definitely return the next time I'm in Sydney.

Great little place in Chinatown, our server was extremely kind and food came out quick and hot. Got the sizzling chicken with xo sauce and was yummy!

Great food, not sure why the bad reviews. We have eaten at this restaurant multiple times and always great service and food. We got the Honey Chicken, Fried Rice, Beef Black Bean, Gyoza and Short Soup. Kids loved it also.....

Let me tell you a little bit of back story before writing a review..
People don't know the facts and would probably change their minds about this place very quickly if they knew.
New Tai Yuen has been in business for almost 50 years. Unfortunately, they may not make it to that half a century because business is not quite the same as it use to be, neither is the rent.
The elderly lady that greets you at the door, isn't rude, she isn't nasty, she is just tired. After working that restaurant floor for over 45 years, she has seen it all. Trust me when I say, your inconsiderate, first world problems don't phase her, she has served the likes of Premiers, international Politicians, Celebrities and gangsters. You're not her worry anymore.
She is tired, and upset..
Once owned by her millionaire boss Mr. Wong, whom is now deceased, this restaurant thrived in Chinatown as one of the most reputable restaurantsin Chinatown, seating hundreds of customers everyday. Today, the large upstairs dining area lays dorment, dark and lifeless because it is just too hard to maintain. What once was full of life, atmosphere, drinking and partying, lies the eerie silence of distilled memories.. You have to appreciate where something has been to fully appreciate where it is now.
I see all these people writing negative reviews that truly aren't warranted. It is actually unfair and also the reason why they are unable to operate at their full potential ever again.
Please, I beg you, give it a try without expectation but with a full heart of understanding.
Before this place is lost to Sydneys dying and already dead nightlife, pay them a visit, show them respect and enjoy your meal. Make sure to tip the waitress, she bloody well deserves it.

Some of these reviews are harsh and outrageous! I had a really pleasant experience.

Chicken fried rice and soup dumplings were tasty and flavourful. Portions were also decent. Food arrived at a reasonable time and the lady was welcoming and friendly.

The upstairs area is beautiful. It provides a traditional ambience and comforting, homely environment. Come late at night for some zen vibes.

This is a great Chinese restaurant for all the menu, food, service, and taste. The combination chow men and the combination omlette is wonderful. This deserves to be a. Five star restaurant.
You need to come here.

The wife and I dropped in late on a Tuesday night. Chose the set menu banquet for 2. Super fast service, tasty food and heaps of it for two people. I'm a big eater and we couldn't finish it. Might be a touch on the pricey side, but you're in central China Town, so you have to expect that.

I don’t know why this place has such bad reviews, I guess it could be that it’s just busy on weekends. But the food that me and my friends had was absolutely delicious and I will come back if I get the chance to

I feel bad that the average is 2.4 stars
I’m just rating it 5 because I’m being nice

Genuinely might be a two star.

Hope they are able to enlarge their portions to match the price they charged.

Had dinner at this restuarant on the 14th September 2013 with my husband, we ordered a Prawn cutlets and Chrispy chicken with pancakes Pekimg style for our entree, and for the main we had sweet & sour pork, billiki chicken and mixed stir fry vegetables. I didnt't expect much from this restaurant at first but I was VERY IMPRESSED by the freshness and the quality of the prawns and chicken it was so tender. I've been to many chinese restuarants and sweet and sour pork is one of my favourite dishes, I must say that the sauce was the best I had in a very long time.

Although the restaurant was abit busy and there was minimum staffs on the floor, they were all very efficient and friendly, I would to make a shout out to the waiter name Alex - (one with bow tie) he had the BEST SERVICE and was also smiling unlike other chinese restaurants waiter''s in chinatown who seem like they ate a sour lolly at all time.

During dinner I decided to have a read through the reviews and noticed that there are some negative feedbacks, I asked the friendly lady at the counter and was advised that they only recently brought over the business at the start of September 2013 therefore the restaurant is under New Management as the previous owner had retired.

I would definitely return to this restaurant and it's quite rare where you find a chinese restaurant who's treats you with courtesy.

I honestly don't know what people are talking about when they're complaining about this place. I must've been lucky because New Tai Yuen was great for me. The food is delicious. The staff are typical Cantonese, getting work done while still being playful and jokey. I'll be going back regularly.

Dumplings were very good as was the service . Find the reviews in vast contrast. Even other patrons there today were raving over the food ..
