Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre

We've been meaning to write a review for a while, as we learned so much from this centre on our travels. Watching the DVD before moving through helped us gain some small insight into the history of displacement endured and the resilience that is so clearly expressed in the art. The interactive displays were interesting to our children too. Kind of wished we'd crossed the Gibb in reverse so this visit in Derby could have come at the start rather than the end, as we learned so much. Definitely make the time to drop in!

What a magnificent experience viewing the cultural displays and historical footage of our indigenous brothers and sisters. The art displays were incredible and we were privileged to meet one of the artists and custodians of the centre. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.

Not much from the outside, but inside the Mowanjum community have done a very good job of sharing their culture and displaying their art. The new museum is very well done.
An excellent use of royalties for regions funding and great credit to the enthusiasm of the locals who have created and run it.

Loved the building design modelled on the Wandjina- mowanjum the local spirit guide which passes spiritual knowledge and teachings down through its people - the local Indi who live around a section of the Gibb river road . Authentic local Indi art with a great selection of original artworks and sculptures of local significance. Spent an enjoyable hour or so here and too much $$

Lovely and informative display. Young lady at the desk was new and learning the job and was delightful to deal with, amazing smile, I didn't get her name but she will be an asset to the centre.

Loved the history shared by the community in the video, artwork and stories. The cave re creation is amazing.
So much to read and learn about aboriginal culture.

I go to regular events there as I live in Derby and know many of the artists and writers.

Great art here, very unique to the area. And can be purchased as well.
Its just off the highway well worth the stop.

An absolute pleasure - the work is nothing short of stunning - of many artists - I had the pleasure of meeting one, and also talked with an employee- I am distressed to hear that government funding is being eroded each year- leaving barely one paid person to run what is a very large business - this is madness - this arts centre provides the canvas on which many lives depend for continuing cultural expression - having been displaced from their country and traditional art sites - the value of Mowanjum Art Centre is integral to the empowerment, health and wellbeing of these wonderful first peoples.
