Shanghai Village

An absolute hidden gem in Melbourne’s China Town! We were looking something to eat with a family. We stumbled across this little Chinese restaurant. It was incredibly busy inside the smells were exceptionally appealing! Don’t expect fancy dishes, service or experience. The food, however, is stand out! The small menu is full of absolutely delicious treats!! We would highly recommend the chicken and prawn steamed dumplings! A wonderful find!

This is clearly a Melbourne favourite! The food was great, quick service and my 6 year old felt like a star when she was offered a little Disney card when leaving! The pork dumplings with spicy chilli oil were an absolute standout!

My favourite of cheap eats in China Town! Great veggie options including Silken tofu in Chilli, Red bean or Spring onion pancake, veggies, veggie dumplings and so much more I haven’t tried yet. The Silken tofu in Chilli is hands down my favourite. Food is ordered from a QR code menu and comes out quickly.
There’s a table of cups, water, cutlery and serviettes and each table comes with so and vinegar. I also purchase chilli oil for the dumplings.

Fantastic food and great prices! The wontons with chilli oil were very fresh and delicious filling. I was told later they were made fresh that morning!
Dumplings and hargow were also great. Fast service too. Order by QR code but pay at the counter.

$2.50 BYO and great food. Service is quick and overall great atmosphere. Came here with a large group with no booking and they accommodated for us straight away. Only had to wait for 5 minutes till we were seated.

been here a few times. such a great place to eat, a very raw experience, just go for the food. they offer byo as well and theres a bottlo around the corner. highly recomend on any visit to Melbourne. will definitely come back again. also super cheap and amazing food. recomend the pork fried dumplings.

Visiting from Sydney and ran into this place. The food is awesome, prices are very reasonable and the service friendly. Prawn toast and BBQ pork buns a must!! Look forward to coming back there when im in Melbourne next!

Popped by for a quick meal. Tasty dishes especially the appetizing cucumber, chili, soy sauce, vinegar and garlic.

The xiao long bao was so good and the steamed lamb dumplings were phenomenal. Even the Chinese broccoli in Gatling sauce is great. The service is no fuss and always a busy bus sling atmosphere

Delicious, authentic and freshly made dumplings as well as a range of other dishes. Really enjoyed our family meal here. Pan fried veggie dumplings and pork buns were the favourites.

Cheap authentic delicious chinese food. Huge queues are normal but it usually does not take long to get a table.

The service is quite basic and minimal but they will provide with what you want if you can get hold of a waitstaff :)

Not only was Shanghai Village an unbelievably memorable evening with the food, we were also delighted with the hospitality efforts of the staff. Thanks to all of the outgoing staff, my puzzle club had the most incredible anniversary in its 85-year history. We will definitely be coming back and might bring the Dungeon & Dragons club too. Thank you, truly.

We came across this place on a bustling Saturday night in Chinatown. Inside it was very full and with a buzzing atmosphere. There was fairly loud music playing. If you don’t like that then maybe come here not on the weekend. But it was a fun place to be on a Saturday night. Quality and quantity of food is very good. Made fresh to order and served hot. It is good for vegetarians and vegans. The Sichuan Peppercorn Chilli oil which is vegan is great with all the dishes. Dumplings are decent to good.

Good chinese food and reasonable price. Not very comfortable atmosphere but not terrible either. People talking make the noise loud here but it's still possible to have a conversation.

I didn’t think anything could be better than HuTong or Shanghai street dumplings - but here we are!
Dumplings are excellent. Basic service and decor with QR code ordering - but the dumplings make it all worth it.

Come here for a quintessential Melbourne dumplings experience, and be sure to BYO… and ignore the way to the toilets (beware the dripping roof!) and ignore the steel wool in the wall crevices (to keep mice out!).

Don’t mess about, just order dumplings here. Ideally you’re on the ground floor or the mid-floor. Otherwise, on the top floor you’ll be subjected to large loud groups as well as need to sit directly beside your fellow customer.

All said and done, it’s a classic for a cheap and cheerful start to your night on the town!
