My family and I always love coming here every July. Definitely recommend as you get the whole place to yourself, and you can walk around and explore

Our third or fourth time here. Love the isolation and the detox it provides. Excellent views from the surrounding hilltops once you get over aching knees - it's worth it. Suggest zigag up the crest just to the west of the hut, looks impossible but isn't, fantastic views once you summit.

A new addition for us was the relocated long-drop toilet into a new fancy bush shower addition. Unfortunately, we were not able to get the system working over a few days, using the instructions provided. We notified a caretaker, hopefully it will be resolved.

A 4WD vehicle is required to access the site, mainly because of ground clearance - towing a stock-standard 6x4 trailer loaded with our gear with a stock 2015 Ranger only required 4WH at one creek crossing exit due to slippage. Expect a bit of grinding occasionally at the hitch, not anything to worry about. An off-road trailer with higher lift than ours wouldn't have a problem, assuming a high-lift towbar is utilised.

An 8x5 trailer will have ingress/exit issues, wouldn't recommend.

Regardless, this spot is in our top position for accommodation for bush camping/accommodation in the Flinders. We love it, and will be back again.

A great bush retreat. The hut is well-stocked with everything you need to have a quiet rest in a beautiful spot. Keep in mind that it is only accessible by a 4wd vehicle and while the track is not difficult, it takes about 30 mins to get in and out.

About Parachilna
Town in Australia

Parachilna is a country town in South Australia. The town was first surveyed in 1863 due to its closeness to a government water well. It is on the railway line and road between Port Augusta and Leigh Creek. Today, the Prairie Hotel, railway station, airstrip and a few buildings remain. The road east into the Flinders Ranges leads through Parachilna Gorge, recognised for its scenic beauty, to Blinman. The town is surrounded by Motpena station pastoral lease. The town's name is from the Aboriginal patajilnda, meaning "place of peppermint gum trees". The spelling difference is due to an early translation misreading. The railway station was completed in 1881 as part of the line to Leigh Creek through Beltana. The area was one of the set locations for the Australian feature film, Rabbit Proof Fence. The Prairie Hotel is the only substantial building in the town, dating from the days when the rail was supreme. Away from the highway, the hotel fronts the railway line and the now derelict station building. The sandstone and limestone building has been in part retained, in part restored and extended. source
